Before her acclaimed role in *The Substance*, Demi Moore appeared with Alec Baldwin and a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a courtroom drama called *The Juror*. Now, after 29 years, that film is becoming available to stream on Hulu.
Although Laura Linney has received numerous awards throughout her career, the 1996 legal thriller *The Juror* was not well-received. In fact, she won a Golden Raspberry Award (a Razzie) for her performance in it. Despite earning only $22 million in theaters, *The Juror* will be available to stream on Hulu starting November 1st.
In the film, Moore plays Annie Laird, a New York City artist who works as a data clerk to make ends meet. She lives with her son, Oliver (played by Gordon-Levitt), and unexpectedly gets called for jury duty in the trial of a powerful crime boss, Louie Boffano (Tony Lo Bianco). While on jury duty, Annie meets Alec Baldwin’s character, Mark Cordell, a wealthy man who is captivated by her art. However, she soon discovers he’s actually a dangerous enforcer for Boffano – known as “The Teacher” – and he attempts to intimidate her into influencing the jury to find Boffano not guilty, threatening both her and her son if she doesn’t comply.
Brian Gibson directed *The Juror*, with a screenplay by Ted Tally, who also wrote the Oscar-winning *The Silence of the Lambs*. The film features Anne Heche and James Gandolfini, known for *The Sopranos*. Unfortunately, *The Juror* received largely negative reviews, earning a 22% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences weren’t much more impressed, giving it a 31% rating based on over 10,000 reviews. Critics described the story as awful and the script as tasteless, and some found Julianne Moore’s performance underwhelming. However, a few reviewers praised the film, with one even calling it a personal favorite.
Demi Moore won a Golden Globe for her Last Movie
Although *The Juror* didn’t gain much popularity with viewers or critics, Michael Moore’s newest film is receiving positive reviews. The 2024 horror-drama currently has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The story centers around Elisabeth Sparkle, a former famous actress who loses her job on a fitness show. Desperate to regain her youthful appearance, she turns to an illegal drug with unusual effects.
I was so fascinated by a recent interview with Demi Moore! She talked about the extreme lengths she went to back in the 90s to stay in shape – things like biking a grueling 26 miles from Malibu to Paramount Studios! It really struck me how much pressure she felt to focus on her appearance. And it’s amazing to see her thriving now, currently starring in the new Paramount+ series, *Landman*, alongside Billy Bob Thornton.
The Juror hits Hulu on Nov. 1.
