While he’s previously played heroes in shows like Smallville and Titans, and even a villain in the Fast & Furious films, most people now recognize him as Jack Reacher. The Prime Video series, based on Lee Child’s novels, features him as a former military police officer who travels around solving problems his own way. The show’s exciting action has made him popular with viewers, and his new, action-filled movie on Netflix is likely to appeal to the same fans.

Let me tell you, “War Machine” is a relentless action flick. It stars Jack Ritchson as 81, a soldier pushing himself to the limit to become an Army Ranger. He’s older, he’s carrying some injuries, but honestly, he blows the other recruits out of the water during training. The final exercise throws a massive curveball – a crashed alien robot – and from there, it’s a non-stop battle just to survive. Ritchson is incredible here, physically embodying a soldier who feels like he could go toe-to-toe with Jack Reacher. This is easily one of his most demanding roles to date.

Reacher Can Take a Beating

Everyone knows Reacher is a skilled fighter, and he’s proven it many times. The first season featured a great fight in a prison bathroom, and the third season brought an even bigger challenge: Paulie, played by the 7’2″ Olivier Richters. Their fight in the season finale lasted almost half an hour, and Reacher was seriously beaten and thrown around before finally winning. It was his most grueling fight yet, and it really left an impression on viewers.

Jack Reacher endures brutal fights and near-fatal injuries, but he always manages to get back on his feet. He routinely defeats opponents who are bigger and stronger than him – the classic underdog story. Most people wouldn’t dare challenge him, and even fewer would expect to win. However, Alan Ritchson’s portrayal has created an action hero who might be even more resilient than Reacher himself.

Ritchson’s 81 Is a Literal ‘War Machine’

The new Netflix sci-fi film centers around soldiers fighting a massive alien robot, aptly named the War Machine. But the title also refers to the main character, 81, and his relentless drive to survive. We see this determination during grueling RASP training, where he pushes through intense pain and even nearly drowns. His commitment is symbolized by a tattoo reading “DFQ” – short for “Don’t fking quit.” Like the character Reacher, 81 is shrouded in mystery, and his fellow trainees react strongly to his past before the film reveals his story.

During a robot battle, the new recruits didn’t have proper weapons because they were still in training. As they fought for their lives, narrowly escaping death at every turn, 81 stepped up as a leader, driving himself and his team forward despite the pain. They faced a brutal gauntlet of challenges – falling down cliffs, being tossed by explosions, and navigating dangerous rapids. 81 took a serious beating, battling a bad knee and dislocated fingers, but refused to stop. After the battle ended, 81, despite needing medical attention, immediately volunteered for another fight. His bravery earned him the rank of Army Ranger, leaving audiences convinced he truly was a force to be reckoned with – a ‘War Machine’ in his own right.

It’s worth discussing whether 81 could win in a fight against Jack Reacher. While Reacher defeated Paulie, that’s nothing compared to the incredible fighting ability 81 demonstrates in War Machine when he single-handedly takes on a huge robot. Perhaps it’s time to acknowledge that Alan Ritchson has created a character who is even more formidable than Jack Reacher.
