Beware! The following contains spoilers for the most recent episode of HBO’s The Chair Company, available on HBO or through an HBO Max subscription.
Honestly, this show, The Chair Company, is just classic Tim Robinson – totally weird, hilarious, and you’re always left wondering what’s going on! The latest episode ended on such a crazy note, everyone’s buzzing about how it’s all going to wrap up in the finale. (Good news, though – we’re already getting a Season 2!) It looks like Ron finally cracked the case of who’s behind the Tecca stuff, but now he’s in a really tough spot. He has to decide if he should expose some serious corruption, or protect his wife’s job. It’s a huge dilemma for him!
I was lost in thought about what might happen next, but my wife brought me back to a crucial question that’s been hanging over the story since the beginning. Finding the answer could reveal just how important Ron is to the bigger picture.

Did Someone Intentionally Put That Chair On The Stage So That Ron Would Fall Over?
The new TV show, The Chair Company, starts with a truly bizarre premise: what happens when an ordinary man accidentally stumbles into a huge corporate conspiracy? The show introduces Tim Robinson as Ron Trosper, a seemingly normal guy tasked with designing a massive new mall. However, everything quickly unravels when a broken office chair causes him to fall, sending him on a spiraling descent into paranoia and chaos.
From then on, the audience has been captivated by a bizarre and winding story involving secret recordings of marriages, questionable photography, oversized red spheres, and a mysterious company with an uncertain future. I’d completely lost sight of my original thought – that Ron’s clumsy stumble (right before a pretty bad joke about Cheez-Its) seemed suspicious. Now, though, I’m starting to wonder again how that poorly-made piece of furniture ended up on stage, and who put it there.
Initially, the idea that everything was planned seemed absurd, especially since we didn’t know much about anyone involved. However, now that we’ve learned more about the people at Fisher Robay and those in Ron’s orbit – and just how strange they all are – it seems more likely that this was a deliberate, though minor, manipulation. I still don’t understand who would be behind it, or why they’d involve something as unusual as a Tecca chair.

I was laughing hysterically at a scene in the first episode of Tim Robinson’s show, The Chair, to the point where even my deaf dog looked at me like, ‘What was that about?’
It’s possible Ron’s coworker, Amanda – the one whose dress he accidentally ended up under – intentionally sabotaged the chair so he’d fall in that specific spot. While that seems even more far-fetched than a simple prank, Amanda has definitely been flirting with Ron during their HR meetings. I initially thought it was a joke – that she was ironically attracted to his disinterest – but now I’m starting to think she had a motive, some kind of plan.
It’s possible the person harassing Ron isn’t Amanda, but someone connected to Fisher Robay who has a personal connection to the man Ron injured during the Jeep Tours incident. While it would be a pretty weak motive, this scenario is as likely as any other explanation right now.
Is it just a coincidence that the woman interrupted by Ron’s fall was named Alice, the same Alice who invested in Barb’s company and whom Ron suspected of being involved with Tecca?

Newest Theory-Related Question: Are Barb And Her Work Partner In On It?
Throughout the first season, I always saw Lake Bell’s character, Barb, as remarkably patient and understanding, even with someone who constantly created awkward situations. However, the last few minutes of episode seven really changed my perspective. Let’s examine some hints that suggest something more is going on.
- Alice Quintana seemed to only get in touch with Barb for investing purposes after Ron found the photos and started digging more into Tecca.
- Apropos of nothing, Barb’s partner George asked Ron about his investigation, making the “reveal” that Natalie told Barb all about it, and that Ron’s wife is supportive of it. Which seemed to me like total garbage in one way or another. Barb would amost definitely not be comfortable with Ron’s current mental state, and while I could see her lying about it to George, I don’t know why she’d tell him about it in the first place just to lie.
- During the final credits, the camera stays mostly locked onto Ron’s face as he alternates between laughing and crying at his own reflection. But when it does change, it’s on Barb’s face laid against Ron’s shoulder. Considering she’s the life of the party, you’d think she’d still be smiling ear to ear, but instead, she looks more than a little disgruntled. It’s definitely not just a resting face, and while it’s obviously impossible to guess what she’s thinking, she could very well be annoyed with Ron for discovering who Alice Quintana is.
Barb might be the only person at work who doesn’t realize something is a trick, which is why she’s upset – perhaps she fears Ron could damage her career. Or, it could be something simple, like an uncomfortable pebble in her shoe making it hard to enjoy dancing.
It’s hard for me to accept the idea that Barb has been involved in this conspiracy from the start. Her marriage to Ron generally seems happy and strong, and I can’t picture her intentionally doing anything to hurt him, especially if it risked damaging her relationship with their children, Natalie and Seth. However, if she believed she could get away with it completely – and avoid getting caught – then maybe she’d be willing to risk losing her children’s trust.
Honestly, after everything that happened with Ron’s chair, I’m starting to think aliens or even Santa Claus might be to blame! Tune in to the Season 1 finale on HBO, Sunday, November 30th at 10 p.m., to see how it all wraps up.
