After seeing the latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, some fans think it might be better for the movie if Wolverine doesn’t appear. It’s currently unclear if Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after his upcoming film with Deadpool.

Currently, six X-Men characters – five from the previous Fox X-Men movies – will join Earth’s heroes in a battle against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey, Jr. These characters are Cyclops, Magneto, Mystique, Professor X, Gambit, and Nightcrawler. While many expect Wolverine to appear, Hugh Jackman’s involvement hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

Look, the internet would absolutely explode if Wolverine showed up alongside the Avengers in Doomsday. It’s a fantastic idea on the surface, and would definitely get people talking. But honestly, as a story element, I’m not convinced it would actually serve the movie well. It feels a little forced, and I worry it might detract from the narrative we’re already building.

A Wolverine Appearance Would Threaten To Ruin Avengers: Doomsday’s Cyclops Story

A preview for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie revealed a significant moment featuring Cyclops. The footage showed Cyclops, wearing his classic blue and yellow costume inspired by the X-Men comics of the Jim Lee era, powerfully unleashing his optic blast.

Even though this scene was brief, it felt more impactful and grand than anything the X-Men movies ever did with Cyclops. It also delivered what many fans have always hoped for in a live-action portrayal of the character.

It seems Avengers: Doomsday is aiming to give Cyclops a proper portrayal in a movie, but that could be tricky if Wolverine is involved. Wolverine has a habit of overshadowing Scott Summers, and that could happen again.

Cyclops is historically the main leader of the X-Men and has been a key character in the comics for much longer than Wolverine has been with the team. However, in the movie X-Men, he was surprisingly portrayed as a secondary character—almost an impediment to Wolverine’s efforts to win over Jean Grey—rather than the capable and heroic leader he’s known to be.

Unfortunately, this problem continued in both X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, and Cyclops ended up with even less to do. Both films focused heavily on Wolverine, giving him most of the screen time and important scenes, which meant characters like Cyclops—who were originally central to the X-Men—were sidelined.

Marvel has the opportunity to avoid the pitfalls of past Fox movie decisions. However, adding Wolverine to an already crowded Avengers: Doomsday film would make it even harder to give all the X-Men characters the attention they deserve. Any appearance by Wolverine would likely be a major moment, potentially overshadowing other characters.

Wolverine Should Be Saved For Avengers: Secret Wars

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has had many iconic stories, and his recent return in Deadpool & Wolverine was fantastic. Now, it’s definitely time for Cyclops to have his moment. James Marsden’s Scott Summers finally has the opportunity to show everyone why he’s the leader the X-Men need in a fight.

Look, I’m not saying we should completely exclude Wolverine just to give Cyclops a moment to shine. We know a big showdown with Doom is coming in Avengers: Secret Wars. Honestly, if Marvel saves Wolverine’s debut for Secret Wars, it gives us something huge to anticipate, and it makes sure Cyclops doesn’t get lost in the shuffle during Avengers: Doomsday. It’s a smart move, really.
