After Nintendo’s Fox McCloud Reveal, Which Smash Bros. Character Joins the Mario Movie Next?

The game includes several characters from Nintendo games other than the Super Mario Bros. series. It was first revealed that Pikmin would be playable, and now an even more popular character is joining the roster, sparking increased speculation about a potential Super Smash Bros. movie.

Before its release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie didn’t suggest it would include characters beyond the Mario universe. While there were small nods to games like Duck Hunt and Punch-Out!!, the movie primarily featured characters from the Mario, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi series.

Fox McCloud Is Bringing Star Fox Into the Mario Movieverse

A recent poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie revealed that Fox McCloud from the Star Fox series will make an appearance. It’s unknown how significant his role will be, but unlike the Pikmin—who had a brief, non-speaking cameo—Fox is a more involved character and will likely interact with Mario and his friends.

With Fox and Pikmin movies now in the works, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Nintendo is planning to make more films beyond the Super Mario Bros. series. It makes sense they waited to see how the first movie performed before committing to additional projects.

Given how incredibly successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie was, it’s not surprising that we’re just now discovering all the hidden cameos. Now, everyone’s wondering what other surprises might be revealed in the future.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s success could pave the way for more films based on Nintendo characters. Nintendo and Illumination might use it to see which characters are most popular with audiences, potentially giving those characters their own movies before eventually bringing them all together in a large team-up film.

What Characters Can a Smash Bros. Movie Use?

A Super Smash Bros. movie faces a big hurdle: getting the rights to include so many characters. Currently, Sony is working on a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, which means Link won’t be available for a Smash Bros. film for the time being.

However, Pokémon are owned by The Pokémon Company, a large entertainment business, and they may not agree to a movie crossover. This means many popular characters from the Super Smash Bros. video game series – like Pikachu and Greninja – likely won’t be included.

It’s unlikely we’ll see guest characters from other franchises, particularly Sonic the Hedgehog, who already has his own successful movies. Don’t expect characters like Ryu from Street Fighter, Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, or Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid to make significant appearances – short cameos are the most we might get.

A Super Smash Bros. movie will probably feature characters created by Nintendo itself. That makes sense for characters like Olimar and the Pikmin, R.O.B., and Fox McCloud, and they could even get their own separate movies later. Including Ness would be great, but it would require the cooperation of Shigesato Itoi to make an EarthBound movie, which could be difficult.

Besides Mario, characters like Captain Falcon (from F-Zero), Samus Aran (Metroid – especially with new Metroid games on Switch), Kirby, the Ice Climbers, and Pit (Kid Icarus) could also appear in Super Mario Bros. movies. The big question is whether these characters are popular enough to get their own movies, and eventually star in a Super Smash Bros. crossover film.

Nintendo might limit these team-ups to quick appearances, and doesn’t seem interested in creating a full-length crossover movie.
