The Predator series is experiencing a revival, becoming as popular and successful as it was when Arnold Schwarzenegger led the first movie. For a long time, fans have wished to see Arnold return in a future Predator film, and Dan Trechtenberg, who is currently in charge of the Predator franchise, suggests that this could actually happen, though nothing is confirmed yet.
Dan Tractenberg initially impressed us with the fantastic Prey, a great addition to the Predator franchise. He then continued with the animated anthology, Predator: Killer of Killers. This film expanded the Predator universe considerably, showing that both Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character, Dutch, from the original movie, and Naru from Prey, were captured by the Predators and held in a state of suspended animation.
That brief glimpse definitely suggests Dutch could reappear in future films, and Dan Trectenberg revealed to Empire (as reported by comicbook.com) that he’s discussed “many possibilities” with Arnold Schwarzenegger concerning the franchise’s future-possibly implying a return is on the table. Tractenberg explained…
I was talking with Arnold, and he mentioned that people often shout, ‘I’ll be back’ at him, but surprisingly, it’s ‘Get to the chopper!’ that he hears the most. He clearly understands how popular the series remains and was enthusiastic about exploring further ideas. He pointed out there are still many stories we could tell – for example, showing how Dutch and Naru were captured, or what happens after they’re thawed out. There are lots of possibilities.
Killer of Killers explained that when a Predator is beaten, the victor isn’t simply let go. Instead, they are taken captive and transported to the Predators’ planet to face a rematch. The ending of the movie shows characters like Dutch and Naru have become part of the Predators’ collection, meaning they will be used as future opponents.
This definitely made a return for Dutch a possibility. Tractenberg explicitly states he spoke with Arnold about “what else we could do,” indicating that, even if there aren’t current plans for a return, the idea was at least considered.
There are definitely a lot of things that could happen. We might see Dutch reappear in another animated movie, or even a live-action sequel. After the success of Prey, many fans have expressed interest in a follow-up. If a sequel does happen, it would almost certainly build on the story from Killer of Killers. It’s even possible we could see Dutch and Naru team up – imagine that pairing!
Dan Tractenberg’s upcoming Predator film will offer a fresh perspective on the series. Predator: Badlands will notably feature one of the Predator aliens as the protagonist.
Following those events, the future is uncertain, but it seems Dan Trachtenberg is interested in continuing to work on Predator films. There’s even a possibility that the original hero of the series might reappear. It’s an exciting prospect for fans!
