After 8 Years, Marvel Can Finally Do Venom’s Best Story Justice

It’s been eight years since Sony launched its live-action Venom movies starring Tom Hardy. Now, a significant development regarding Marvel’s Lethal Protector character suggests the franchise could be heading in a completely different direction.

Sony’s Venom movies have been a big success outside of their Spider-Man films, and the studio might be planning something truly ambitious with the franchise. Recent news about a future animated project suggests they’re also focused on faithfully adapting one of Venom’s most popular storylines.

Sony Pictures Is Developing A New Animated Venom Movie (Tom Hardy Is Involved)

A new animated Venom movie is in the works, and writers/directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (known for Final Destination: Bloodlines) are on board. The biggest news is that Tom Hardy, who played Venom in the live-action films, is also involved, though his role hasn’t been announced yet.

While Tom Hardy is primarily producing the upcoming animated Venom movie, there’s a chance he might also continue voicing the character in the animated version.

As a huge cinema fan, I think an animated Venom film could be really exciting. It feels like there’s so much story left over from 2024’s Venom: The Last Dance, especially with how they set up Andy Serkis’ character as the big villain, Knull – you know, the King in Black. An animated sequel could finally pick up those loose ends and explore that storyline properly.

Could The Animated Venom Movie Be A King In Black Adaptation?

As a huge film fan, I think Sony could really knock it out of the park if they followed through on those hints from ‘The Last Dance’ and made an animated ‘King in Black’ movie. It would be a seriously ambitious and awesome move!

The 2020 Marvel Comics storyline ‘King in Black’ featured the arrival of Knull, a powerful god of the symbiotes, who invaded Earth with an army of symbiote dragons. This forced Marvel’s heroes to unite and defend the planet, ultimately leading to a victory for Venom (Eddie Brock) over Knull, and Venom taking on the role of the new King in Black.

Given its scope and intensity, animation might actually be the best way to bring this story to the screen with the epic feel it deserves. Sony has also found significant success with animation recently, especially with the critically acclaimed Spider-Verse movies and projects like KPop Demon Hunters.

No matter the specific storyline – whether it’s based on ‘King in Black’ or something else – an animated Venom movie sounds really promising and offers a fresh way to keep the franchise going.
