Marvel fans hoping for a new Blade movie received disappointing news recently. Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, announced that the project—which had been in development for seven years—has been cancelled.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to discuss Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Kevin Feige indicated that a planned Spider-Man reboot starring Mahershala Ali is no longer happening. He expressed disappointment, saying, “I feel like a huge failure that we couldn’t get that project started with Mahershala.”
The MCU’s Blade Remains 7 Years in the Making
Marvel Studios first announced plans to reboot Blade at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, also revealing Mahershala Ali as the star. However, the film has faced many challenges over the past four years, including changes in directors (Bassim Tariq and Yann Demange) and multiple rewrites by different screenwriters like Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, Michael Green, and Eric Pearson.
Despite challenges and setbacks during production, a version of Blade, reimagined as Moon Knight, showed up in the Marvel Zombies series. Though the character’s appearance was based on actor Ali, a different actor, Todd Williams, provided the voice.
If Kevin Feige still thought the Blade movie could happen, he probably wouldn’t have considered the project a failure. However, his recent statements support a report from January 2026 by insider Jeff Sneider, which indicated the reboot was canceled at Marvel Studios.
Despite early concerns, Mahershala Ali might still be able to successfully play Blade. Marvel has already invested in him for the role, having featured him in a brief, uncredited voice cameo at the end of the 2021 film Eternals.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited to hear from Sneider that they were considering a Midnight Sons movie, bringing Blade into the mix. It sounds like it’s been a project they’ve talked about for a while. Oscar Isaac, who’s Moon Knight, even hinted at it in an interview with Happy Sad Confused, saying there were some “interesting conversations” about the Midnight Sons. It definitely sounds like it’s been on their radar!
The next MCU movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, arrives in theaters on July 31.
