Aemond Targaryen Finally Replaces Aegon On The Iron Throne In House Of The Dragon Season 3’s New Images

HBO Max is giving fans a preview of what’s coming in 2026, and we’re finally getting a glimpse of returning characters from season 3 of House of the Dragon, including Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen. The next installment of the Game of Thrones spinoff is scheduled for summer 2026 and promises even more intense battles, betrayals, and heartbreaking events as the Dance of the Dragons truly begins.

HBO Max recently shared a preview of season 3 of House of the Dragon, including footage in a 2026 release reel and accompanying still images. The stills offer glimpses of key moments and characters: James Norton as Ormund Hightower on the battlefield, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) wearing her crown and looking somber, Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) in combat, a burning skull, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) comforting Aemond, and Alicent approaching Aemond while he’s seated on the Iron Throne.

The depiction of Aemond on the Iron Throne reflects a significant event from George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood. The book details how Aemond briefly acted as regent when his brother, King Aegon, was unable to rule. During this time, Aemond famously sat on the Iron Throne and even wore the crown originally worn by Aegon the Conqueror, reportedly believing it suited him better than it ever had Aegon II.

As a huge fan of House of the Dragon, I’ve been pouring over the new Throne Room image from season 3, and it doesn’t look like Aemond is actually wearing Aegon’s crown just yet. But honestly, I still fully expect to see that happen! We got a taste at the end of season 2 of Aemond taking charge, leading those council meetings as Prince Regent. But season 3 seems like it’s going to go even further – the story is heading towards Aemond really grabbing power and, shockingly, actually sitting on the Iron Throne himself!

A key part of the upcoming third season will be how long Aemond and the Greens can stay in control of King’s Landing, as Rhaenyra is determined to take back the throne. As Rhaenyra prepares for war, the pressure on her is increasing, which is highlighted in a new photo of Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra, looking serious while wearing Viserys’ crown.

New images from the set of House of the Dragon season 3 reveal key characters preparing for war. We see Ormund Hightower, Otto Hightower’s nephew, leading Aegon’s forces and becoming a central figure in the Greens’ military plans. Meanwhile, Corlys Velaryon is shown in armor looking worried, likely in anticipation of the upcoming Battle of the Gullet.

A strange new image depicts a skull being burned, but it’s unknown who it belonged to. While Targaryens traditionally burn the dead on large funeral pyres, this appears to be happening in a simple fireplace. It’s probably the head of an enemy being burned, or possibly connected to a mysterious vision experienced at Harrenhal.

Like any story set in the world of Game of Thrones, the first season of House of the Dragon is filled with heartbreaking events for both branches of the Targaryen family. The cycle of revenge, which began with the death of Prince Lucerys, will escalate and become even more brutal as the fight for the Iron Throne continues.
