Owen Cooper, the young actor known for his role in the popular Netflix series Adolescence, has quickly become famous. He recently shared his secret to staying grounded despite his newfound success.
Cooper recently received a Critics’ Choice Award for his supporting role in a TV movie or limited series. Following the awards show, the 16-year-old actor spoke with People magazine about prioritizing relationships with loved ones and the everyday habits he had before becoming well-known for his part as Jamie Miller in Adolescence.
I’m really lucky to have a supportive family and incredible friends. Even after my album came out, I wanted things to stay normal, so I tried to keep life as usual. Going to school the next day felt like nothing had changed, and that’s how I preferred it.
Cooper believes his grounded personality is thanks to his family and friends, who have helped him stay balanced even with his quick rise to fame. Despite the success of his film, Adolescence, he continued going to school and kept his daily routine largely the same. He feels maintaining a normal life has helped him cope with the challenges of being a celebrity.
I’ve got the best support, best protection, so I can’t not keep my feet on the ground.
Adolescence is a dramatic series centering on Jamie (Cooper), a middle schooler accused of a classmate’s murder. Critics and viewers alike lauded the actor’s performance as a teenager struggling with fear, confusion, and the loss of his innocence. His work earned him numerous award nominations and wins, quickly establishing him as a rising star.
I’m so thrilled for Cooper! On top of winning a Critics’ Choice Award, he’s up for a Golden Globe this year for Best Supporting Actor on Television, and he’s also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for his breakthrough performance in a new series. And can you believe he already won an Emmy last year? He was one of the youngest people ever to get that award, which is amazing!
Cooper shared how much his life has changed over the past year, calling it a truly transformative experience for both him and his family. He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities he’s received and vowed to appreciate every one of them.
Honestly, the last year has been incredible for my family and me. It’s completely changed our lives, and we’re so grateful for everything. I truly cherish every single moment we’ve had – it’s something we’ll always remember.
Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix.
