Adam Sandler is famous for his comedy, especially from his time on Saturday Night Live and the movies he’s made with his production company, Happy Madison. But even George Clooney recognizes Sandler’s talent goes beyond just making people laugh, and his recent work, like the Netflix film Jay Kelly, shows that. Sandler couldn’t have imagined how his career would evolve, though he always hoped to do more dramatic work. Interestingly, his grandmother once made a humorous prediction about his future.

Although Adam Sandler has made many hugely popular and well-loved films, he’s never received an Oscar nomination. He seems to be aiming for recognition this year with a more serious acting role, a change from his usual comedic parts. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sandler shared a funny story about how his grandmother encouraged him to pursue dramatic roles, and how it eventually led to him getting one.

I started my career doing stand-up comedy, which led to an opportunity on Saturday Night Live. Like Eddie Murphy, I also began acting in movies. I always hoped to do a more dramatic role one day—my grandmother even predicted I’d be the next James Caan! Then, Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the movie Punch-Drunk Love specifically for me, and that really opened the door to more serious acting work.

Looking back, I think Adam Sandler’s grandmother was right. She saw beyond his funny roles on SNL and in comedies and recognized his genuine talent as an actor, no matter the type of film. James Caan and Sandler actually have this in common: they’re both incredibly versatile performers. Each has successfully stepped into the other’s strengths later in their careers.

James Caan, known for his dramatic roles, also excelled at comedy, most notably in the beloved holiday film Elf. He even appeared in comedies with Adam Sandler, like That’s My Boy and Bulletproof. Similarly, Sandler proved his dramatic range with the intense 2019 film Uncut Gems. Sandler has said that director Paul Thomas Anderson was the first to recognize his potential, just like his grandmother did.

When Punch-Drunk Love came out in 2002, it was a critical success and even earned Adam Sandler a Golden Globe nomination. His character, Barry Egan, was a surprisingly sensitive, yet quick-tempered, man – a role very different from Sandler’s usual comedic parts. Although the film has funny moments, it required Sandler to show a more serious side, exploring difficult themes like mental health, loneliness, and being threatened. It’s a film that doesn’t get talked about as much now, but I believe everyone should see it.

You know, after Punch-Drunk Lovers (or Uncut Gems as some call it), I was really hoping Adam Sandler would keep taking on these more dramatic roles, and he absolutely is with Jay Kelly. It’s pretty unusual to see a George Clooney movie getting this much buzz about a supporting actor, but Sandler totally deserves it. Honestly, his performance alongside Clooney is what really makes the film tick – it’s the emotional core of everything.

I’m a big fan of Adam Sandler and enjoy all his movies, even the silly ones. But his best work, in my opinion, comes when he plays characters with more depth and emotion. Now that he’s established in his career, I’d love to see him focus on those kinds of roles. I’m hoping he’ll be recognized this award season for his performance in Jay Kelly, which is currently available to watch on Netflix.
