He’s known for many popular movies, like his work on the Star Wars films. But his recent dinosaur thriller, 65, isn’t performing well on major streaming services.

According to FlixPatrol, the 2023 film 65 is now the fifth most popular movie on HBO Max. While it’s currently behind other big hits like One Battle After Another and the first two John Wick movies, it’s likely to climb higher on the streaming charts soon.

The film, directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, tells the story of Mills, a space traveler from the planet Somaris. After an asteroid damages his ship, he crash-lands on Earth during prehistoric times. He’s one of only two survivors, the other being a young girl named Koa, played by Ariana Greenblatt. Mills is determined to survive this dangerous new world and find a way to return them both to their home planet.

The movie 65 came out in theaters on March 10, 2023, and received mixed reviews. Critics were generally negative, describing it as visually impressive but lacking substance. While audiences were more receptive, the film only earned $60 million at the box office, despite costing $45 million to make.

Currently, the movie 65 has a 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 130 reviews from critics. However, audiences seem to like it more, giving it a 64% approval rating based on over 1,000 reviews.

Before the release of the film 65, one of the filmmakers discussed the challenge of combining its intense, suspenseful atmosphere with the quieter themes of loss and perseverance. Beck explained that achieving this balance was difficult, describing the movie as a blend of big-budget spectacle, like the work of Roland Emmerich, and the more thoughtful, artistic style of Terrence Malick.

The story blends thrilling survival elements with intense emotional conflict between two characters. Their friction arises from their individual experiences with loss and grief. This focus on loss actually began during the writing process, stemming from deep thought about the impact of the dinosaurs’ extinction.

He offered a slightly different perspective on the contrasting elements in 65, describing it as “a weird mix” of dinosaurs, laser guns, and spaceship crashes. However, he emphasized that these were secondary to the film’s core identity as a family movie dealing with important themes of grief, accessible to everyone.

I received the project right at the start of the COVID pandemic, and the themes really resonated with what was happening,” Driver explained. “Creating a shared experience in theaters, about people uniting against a completely unprecedented challenge and forming strong bonds with each other – it felt very meaningful.

65 is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
