Adam Driver Confirms Disney Killed His Kylo Ren Star Wars Spin-Off Film ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’

Another potential Star Wars project has fallen through. Actor Adam Driver, known for playing Kylo Ren (Ben Solo) in the recent Star Wars sequels beginning with The Force Awakens, revealed in an interview with the Associated Press that he and director Steven Soderbergh secretly worked on a film called The Hunt for Ben Solo for two years. They ultimately presented their idea to Lucasfilm and Disney, but it wasn’t picked up.

Adam Driver described a project called The Hunt for Ben Solo as “really cool,” but explained it’s been cancelled, allowing him to discuss it publicly for the first time.

It’s puzzling when a talented actor and a celebrated director can’t convince studio heads to make another installment in a popular series. This situation raises the question of why certain stories get the green light while others are rejected.

Another Lost Star Wars Film

Following the conclusion of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, where his character, Ben Solo, found redemption but ultimately died, Adam Driver felt his character’s story wasn’t fully resolved. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy spoke with him about potentially making another Star Wars film, and Driver was interested in returning.

He explained that he was always ready to jump at the chance if the director and story were strong. He also shared that he really enjoyed the character and playing the role.

I heard that after The Rise of Skywalker, Driver had a really cool idea for a new movie continuing the story. He pitched it to Steven Soderbergh, who he’d worked with on Logan Lucky a few years back. They teamed up with Soderbergh’s wife, Rebecca Blunt, a screenwriter, and created an outline. They presented it to Kathleen Kennedy at Lucasfilm, along with Cary Beck and Dave Filoni. Everyone seemed to really like it, so they brought in Scott Z. Burns, who Soderbergh often works with, to actually write the screenplay.

According to Driver, the script for The Hunt for Ben Solo was incredibly exciting – one of the best he’s ever worked with – and Lucasfilm was very enthusiastic about it.

Among the film’s selling points was a reportedly conservative budget.

Driver explained they aimed to be careful and cost-effective with their spending, keeping the project’s budget lower than average while still capturing the same heartfelt, handcrafted feel of the films that inspired it.

But when it was taken to Disney brass Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, they said no.

“They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that,” Driver explained.

With characters like Darth Maul, Palpatine, and Boba Fett unexpectedly returning from death, some fans are questioning the consistency of the Star Wars universe.

Disney’s decision-making regarding Ben Solo likely wasn’t based on whether he could realistically survive, but more on the massive $600 million budget of The Rise of Skywalker, as reported by Forbes. The financial underperformance of both The Rise of Skywalker and Solo: A Star Wars Story probably also discouraged Disney CEO Bob Iger from immediately greenlighting another era of Star Wars sequel films.

Conclusion

As stories become valuable brands, maintaining those brands often takes priority over artistic vision. Disney and Lucasfilm have repeatedly announced and then delayed or cancelled Star Wars projects, even those planned with well-respected directors like Patty Jenkins, Rian Johnson, and James Mangold. Although films like The Hunt for Ben Solo could have resonated with fans, Disney probably considered them too risky financially.

They should’ve made it. Nobody wanted Ben Solo to be dead.

Steven Soderbergh said he had a lot of fun imagining the film, but he’s disappointed fans won’t ever see it. Ultimately, The Hunt for Ben Solo serves as a poignant reminder of how difficult it can be to pour your heart and creativity into a large-scale Hollywood project, and sometimes, despite your best efforts, things just don’t work out.
