Excellent news for fans: original villains are on their way.

According to a post on social media from @screentime, Scott Snyder (writer of Absolute Batman) and artist Nick Dragotta are planning to introduce brand new villains into the Absolute Universe. Although Snyder and Dragotta haven’t officially confirmed this, it’s likely they’ll be creating new enemies for Gotham City.

The Court of Owls is a captivating secret society with deep roots in Gotham City’s criminal activity. Their history, as depicted in DC Comics, stretches back to the earliest days of humankind. Given how well-established the Court is within the DC Universe, any new creatures or monsters created by writers Scott Snyder and Greg Dragotta would be a fantastic addition to the larger fictional world.

As a huge DC fan, I’m loving what’s happening with the Absolute Universe! It’s amazing to see all these classic heroes and villains getting fresh, modern takes. They’re even bringing some of the more overlooked characters, like Martian Manhunter, back into the spotlight with really inventive stories. Absolute Scarecrow’s Arrival In The Absolute Universe Has Been Hyped Up

Before adding new villains to Batman’s collection, the creative team plans to revisit classic foes with a darker, more disturbing spin. Issue #19 of Absolute Batman will focus on a particularly deadly version of Scarecrow, with a higher body count than ever seen in Batman comics. Writer Scott Snyder explained that a key challenge is updating the concept of fear to resonate with modern audiences, asking, “What are we truly afraid of today?” and how to make that fear both universal and personal.

Snyder explained his take on the Scarecrow character. He sees Scarecrow as a ‘straw man’ – someone easily blamed and defeated, yet surprisingly frightening. The reason crows fear him isn’t because they see him as human, but because he’s unpredictable and unknown. According to Snyder, Scarecrow forces characters – and the audience – to question everything they believe, revealing uncomfortable truths. This, combined with the character’s violent nature, is what makes him such a compelling and enjoyable villain to write.
