ABC is shaking things up with the police drama The Rookie – it’s the biggest change to the show in three years. Season 8, which started airing on January 6th, has already introduced some big developments, including a new role for Grey and the official start of a relationship between Tim and Lucy.
As reported by Deadline, The Rookie is changing nights! Starting January 26th, it will move from Tuesdays at 10 p.m. to Mondays at 10 p.m. This change is happening to make room for a new drama called RJ Decker, starring Scott Speedman, which will premiere on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on March 3rd.
Following a schedule change, The Rookie will now air on Monday nights after American Idol. RJ Decker will air after new episodes of High Potential season 2 and Will Trent season 4, but those shows will stay in their current time slots. Only The Rookie‘s air date is being changed.
Similar to the show The Rookie, RJ Decker features a well-known actor, Speedman, playing a private investigator in Florida. He solves cases alongside his ex-wife, who is a journalist, and her wife, a police officer. This show, like High Potential and Will Trent, centers around a new case each week, making it a familiar format for fans of those series.
This isn’t the first time The Rookie has moved to a different night on ABC. It’s previously aired on Sundays – unusual for the network, which usually schedules its most popular shows during the week. But recently, the show has been a regular on Tuesdays, so this new change is significant.
It’s hard to say how this change will affect the show’s ratings, which have been fairly consistent in recent seasons. While it will now air after American Idol, it could attract some viewers who watch that show. How well it performs on streaming services the next day will also be a key factor in its success going forward.
