Fans of the show Will Trent might be disappointed with season 4, as it appears ABC is creating more distance between the characters Will and Angie. Despite the start of the new TV season, ABC is delaying the premieres of two popular shows. Both Will Trent season 4 and The Rookie season 8 won’t arrive until early January, which is a longer wait than usual.
ABC has delayed premieres before, and those shows generally performed well. While the delay for season 8 of The Rookie likely benefits the show with exciting new developments, the same might not be true for the Atlanta-based procedural. This doesn’t mean season 4 of Will Trent will be poor in quality, but certain storylines or characters may suffer as a result of the delay.
Will Trent Season 4 Is Developing Wilbur’s Personal Arc Separate From Angie
ABC
Wow, season 3 of Will Trent threw a real curveball at us! Angie’s pregnant with Seth’s baby, and while it doesn’t necessarily kill any potential romance between her and Will, it definitely adds a lot of complications. They’re going to have to navigate this whole situation thinking about the baby, and with Seth in the picture, things are just…messy. Honestly, though, what’s really got me worried is the uncertainty about Scott Foley returning for season 4. That’s a huge piece of the puzzle, and not knowing if he’ll be back is definitely a bad sign.
Despite this, a clearer sign that the ABC show doesn’t intend to reunite the characters comes from what’s happening with Will’s storyline. According to TVLine’s Matt Webb Mitovich, the show’s executive producers – Liz Heldens, Daniel Thomsen, and Karine Rosenthal – have indicated that:
Will will reconnect with two people he used to know. Both admire him, but they both also tend to act without thinking things through, and they’ll continue to be important parts of his story all season long.
The introduction of these new characters suggests that Will Trent is expanding its focus beyond Will’s relationship with Angie. While season 3 tried to do this with Marion, her storyline still revolved around romance. These upcoming characters, hinted at by the show’s producers, seem different and may explore new aspects of Will’s life.

Following the difficult events at the end of Will Trent season 2, Will and Angie’s relationship changed significantly. They were both reluctant to reach out, unsure how to navigate things after what happened. Despite this, they continued to rely on each other as their primary source of support—even while pursuing other relationships.
Season 4 of Will Trent needs to address the complicated relationship between Will and Angie. They share a strong connection built on both history and shared trauma, but whether that will lead to a romantic reunion is unclear. The show’s source material – Karin Slaughter’s novels – has Will end up with Sara Linton, a character who hasn’t appeared on the show yet. If the series decides to deviate from the books, it’s crucial that Will and Angie both work through their personal struggles individually before considering a reconciliation.
