Abbott Elementary’s Surprise Romance Returning In Season 6 Teased By Mr. Johnson Actor

William Stanford Davis hinted that a surprising love interest might reappear for his character, Mr. Johnson, on the show Abbott Elementary.

Khandi Alexander became part of the popular ABC comedy in January, playing Miss Carroll. She was a coworker of Mr. Johnson, also a custodian, at the mall where Abbott Elementary held classes after their school’s heating system failed. Despite a rocky beginning, Miss Carroll and Mr. Johnson began to develop a romantic connection.

Tyler James Williams, who plays Gregory Eddie, may reappear on Abbott Elementary in season six, scheduled to air in the 2026-2027 television season. He told ScreenRant that he believes the show’s creators plan to bring his character, Miss Carroll, back for a few episodes next season.

He acknowledged he’s usually the very last to learn any news about the show, so he isn’t certain what will happen with Miss Carroll. In fact, the producers specifically kept the details of Mr. Johnson’s romantic storyline a secret from him, wanting him to be surprised when he received the script.

I really hope she returns! After her first appearance, it was unclear if the show would bring the character back. I suspected they wouldn’t leave the storyline hanging, but I’m usually the last to find out anything. Sheryl, Lisa, and Janelle will probably know before me. Whenever I ask them, they just say they’ve been sworn to secrecy. Even when a producer hinted at the upcoming episode, they didn’t share many details, wanting the script to be a surprise.

Davis was immediately impressed with the script, saying it was both touching and hilarious. He especially appreciated how funny it was, which is exactly what he looks for in a show like Abbott Elementary. “I really wanted something laugh-out-loud funny, and this delivered,” he explained.

Working with Alexander was truly enjoyable – she’s a remarkably talented actress. Davis had admired her work previously, having been a fan of her performances in shows like The Corner, What’s Love Got to Do With It, and Scandal. Alexander has also appeared in a variety of other popular films and television series, including There’s Something About Mary, Fahrenheit 451, ER, CSI: Miami, and Treme.

I really enjoyed how the script was written – it was both touching and hilarious, which is exactly what I was hoping for. We had a great time filming it, and I think Khandi Alexander will be back for a few episodes next season – I certainly hope so, as she’s a joy to work with and a fantastic actress. I’ve been a fan of hers since her roles in shows like The Corner, What’s Love Got to Do With It, and Scandal.

When Janelle James arrived on set to film the fifth season episode of Abbott Elementary, titled “Mall Part 3: Heroes,” she was completely prepared and enthusiastic.

Despite already being established on the show, Alexander offered Davis valuable advice that made their scenes work better. She suggested a specific approach, saying, “This will be funnier if you do it this way.” It turned out she was right – they quickly found a good rhythm, had fun with it, and created very authentic moments.

She arrived fully prepared and quickly explained what I needed to do. She suggested a specific approach, saying it would make the final result funnier, and she was right! She immediately got involved, and together we had a great time making everything feel as authentic as possible.

Janelle James began appearing on Abbott Elementary in 2021, initially in a recurring capacity. He later became a main cast member in the show’s second season. For his work on the series, he’s received a SAG Award, a Peabody Award, and an NAACP Image Award. He stars alongside Quinta Brunson, who created and executive produces the show, as well as Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, and Chris Perfetti.

Abbott Elementary generally focuses on the teachers, meaning the school custodian doesn’t get much attention. However, Mr. Johnson is always hilarious whenever he appears, thanks to his quirky personality and belief in conspiracy theories.

Davis’s relationship with Miss Carroll has given fans an unprecedented look into his private life, and he believes this will continue to be a part of the show next season.

Abbott Elementary airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
