Be warned: this contains spoilers for Season 5, Episode 8 of Abbott Elementary! If you haven’t watched it yet, you can stream the show with a Hulu subscription.
I’m still reeling from the news about Abbott Elementary! It’s hard to believe the show will be completely different when it comes back in 2026 – they’re actually moving the whole crew from the school to a mall! Apparently, they had to shut down the building they were filming in. Honestly, it’s the most unexpected thing this show has ever done, and I’m already excited to see all the hilarious chaos that’s going to come from it.
Ava and her colleagues should have taken the maintenance man, Steve Agee’s, advice and closed the school as soon as they learned the furnace was broken. Ignoring his warning led to serious problems – the school was practically falling apart after the furnace failed. As Steve put it when he diagnosed the issue:
Well, definite burstage, serious flood, and your furnace is completely done-zo.
Initially, the teachers were skeptical. But when Agee’s character explained the urgent need for a new school, they understood. Mr. Johnson was happy to point out they were wrong, and honestly, they deserved it after dismissing the idea at first.
Let’s head inside the mall. Remember, at the end of the last episode, Ava discovered a temporary new location for Abbott. She explained that she’d found it, and she said:
Instead of enjoying a relaxing break, Ava Colman has been on a frantic search for a new school building – she’s checked every possible place online! It turns out she’s limited to options provided by the school district. Say hello to the newly renovated Abbott Elementary – it used to be a mall, but we’re determined to make it a great learning environment.
When Quinta Brunson hinted that the Season 5 Christmas episode would be a “game changer,” I definitely didn’t see a mall coming! I was so focused on Gregory and Janine’s relationship, thinking something big would happen there. I even wondered if Ava might get fired again. Honestly, the school closing and everyone having to move was a total shock – it never even crossed my mind!
I’m really excited about this, because the trouble it could cause sounds amazing. Honestly, there are endless possibilities for funny situations and ridiculous outcomes.
I can already picture the chaos: teachers adapting stores into learning spaces, a potential mess with the food court, and school staff managing kids and escalators. This new location truly expands the possibilities for Abbott Elementary, both practically and creatively, and I’m excited to see how it challenges everyone involved.

It’s really funny to imagine Mr. Johnson trying to revamp the clearing process. Gregory forcing the Garden Goofballs to work at a mall is sure to be chaotic and hilarious, and Janine’s enthusiasm for turning the mall into a school is delightful. While the whole plan is absurd, it’s actually brilliant because it pushes these characters into completely new situations, and I’m excited to see what stories come from it.
The fifth season of Abbott Elementary wrapped up with a strong finale that significantly impacted the show. It’s exciting to see the series continue to evolve and surprise viewers, and I’m already looking forward to the new adventures when the next school year begins.
