A24’s Highest-Grossing Horror Movie Talk to Me Ever Made Finds New Streaming Home 3 Years Later

A24 has quickly become a major player in the film industry, known for powerful dramas like Marty Supreme and the Academy Award-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, among many other successful films. They’ve also found significant success with horror, and their 2023 release became their highest-grossing horror film to date.

The horror movie marked the first time Danny and Michael Philippou directed a film, and it unexpectedly became very popular. It first premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival on October 30, 2022, and then was released to a wider audience on July 28, 2023. As of February 1st, three years have passed.

Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the film’s script was written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman, inspired by an idea from Daley Pearson. It centers around a group of teenagers who find an embalmed hand and discover they can communicate with spirits. They enjoy the excitement at first, but things quickly escalate, and someone accidentally awakens dangerous supernatural powers.

Sophie Wilde played the lead role of Mia in the horror film, alongside Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, Zoe Terakes, Chris Alosio, Marcus Johnson, and Alexandria Steffensen.

Critics and audiences alike have praised Talk to Me, giving it a 94% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers highlighted its captivating story and effective use of practical effects, calling it a genuinely scary modern horror film rooted in traditional horror elements.

As a horror fan, I wasn’t the only one gripped by Talk to Me! Audiences clearly loved it, with an 83% approval rating. What really stood out was how genuinely scary it was, combined with a breakneck pace and a plot that kept you guessing. And financially? It was a huge hit! According to The Numbers, it made $91.9 million worldwide on a tiny $4.2 million budget – easily becoming one of the most successful horror films of recent years.

Talk to Me Wasn’t a One-Time Hit

Talk to Me was the first film directed by the Philippous brothers, but they didn’t stop there. In 2025, they followed it up with Bring Her Back, another well-received and commercially successful supernatural horror film.

The film Bring Her Back centers around two step-siblings who become orphans and are then caught up in a strange occult ritual orchestrated by their foster mother. While critics gave it a solid ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 89%, audiences scored it at 79%. Made with a $15 million budget, the movie earned $39 million, which was enough to turn a profit.

Talk to Me will debut on Peacock on Feb. 1.
