The Turtles’ greatest friend, who they’ve been missing for a long time, has returned – but they haven’t realized it yet!
With the dangerous Hieronymous Hale – a corrupt, shape-shifting former District Attorney – finally defeated, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles can take a breath and process the events of the last year. This includes grappling with the loss of Splinter and accepting that he’s gone. However, Karai may still be considering a resurrection, though her reasons for wanting to bring back her former enemy are currently unclear, as seen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #12 (by Jason Aaron, Juan Ferreyra, and Shawn Lee).

Depending on which version of the story you follow, Splinter the rat was once a man named Hamato Yoshi. According to the current storyline from IDW Publishing, Yoshi and Oroku Saki (who would become Shredder) were friends, but their relationship turned bitter when Yoshi challenged Saki’s growing cruelty. Later, Yoshi and his sons were reborn as test subjects at StockGen, where they were eventually mutated into the familiar forms we recognize today.
Man, it’s been a whole saga with Splinter. He was a total legend for years, but things changed when he made the ultimate sacrifice – he took down this immortal dragon that was about to wreck New York. Even though we’ve seen him as a spirit sometimes, his death really hit us hard, especially Donatello. He’s been totally fixated on this rat he thinks is Splinter’s ghost, and honestly, it’s starting to worry the rest of us. It’s just… a lot.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #12 is on sale now from IDW Publishing.
