A Man on the Inside Season 2 Misses Obvious Good Place Easter Egg

The second season of Netflix’s A Man on the Inside is out now, and many fans were surprised to find a missed opportunity for a nod to The Good Place. The first season of A Man on the Inside was a big hit, largely thanks to its strong cast – particularly Ted Danson – and its heartwarming story.

One of the best things about A Man on the Inside is how much it resembles a follow-up to The Good Place. This isn’t just because Ted Danson, who played Michael on The Good Place, stars in it, but also because the same creator, Michael Schur, is behind both shows. A Man on the Inside explores similar ideas and feels like a seamless extension of the previous series.

As a huge fan of both shows, I was really surprised when A Man on the Inside season 2 didn’t include a The Good Place Easter egg that would have fit perfectly. It’s a connection that seemed so obvious, and honestly, I’m still baffled by the decision to leave it out!

A Man On The Inside Is The Good Place’s Sister Show

Even before A Man on the Inside premiered, it seemed likely the show would have similarities to The Good Place, since both were created by Michael Schur and starred Ted Danson. However, the degree to which the two shows were connected turned out to be more significant than expected.

Beyond appearances by familiar actors from The Good Place – like D’Arcy Carden and Marc Evan Jackson in season one, and Jason Mantzoukas in season two – A Man on the Inside is filled with nods and references to the show, both obvious and hidden.

Season 1 featured a nod to the show The Good Place. The retirement community where Charles pretends to be a resident has a memory wing called “The Neighborhood,” and Charles is assigned room 322 – a number that matches the exact number of residents in the neighborhood from The Good Place.

The many similarities and connections between A Man on the Inside and The Good Place led some viewers to speculate if the shows took place in the same universe. While that’s unlikely given the details of each story, it’s obvious the shows are closely related. It’s surprising, then, that the creators didn’t explore this connection further in season 2.

A Man On The Inside Season 2 Not Referencing Chidi Was A Missed Opportunity

Season two of A Man on the Inside finds Charles working as an engineering professor – a job he actually held before retirement – rather than going undercover. The season largely takes place on a college campus, and features a scene where lead investigator Julie consults with a professor of moral philosophy.

Considering our past discussions about The Good Place, you might expect this episode to mention Chidi Anagonye or even feature William Jackson Harper. However, that’s not the case. This scene has no connection to Chidi whatsoever.

It’s a real shame that A Man on the Inside didn’t acknowledge its connection to The Good Place and the character of Chidi. Including that similar storyline without even a small reference feels like a huge oversight, and honestly, it was quite surprising and disappointing to see.

As a big fan, I’m still puzzling over why A Man on the Inside didn’t nod to The Good Place in that moment. Honestly, I really wanted to see Chidi make one last appearance, and it’s hard to shake that feeling.
