Many Christmas movies are watched again and again, and Love Actually is one of the most popular modern examples. While the film is known for its touching and sometimes sad stories, there was one particular plotline that, despite being confirmed by the filmmakers, Rowan Atkinson – who played a central character – had never personally confirmed was actually what happened.
Many fans have long believed Rowan Atkinson’s character in Love Actually wasn’t just a person, but a kind of Christmas angel subtly guiding the story’s events. Atkinson recently confirmed on BBC Two (as reported by LADBible) that this was the original intention for his character. He also pointed out that even though the movie never explicitly reveals this, it doesn’t mean it isn’t still true within the film’s narrative. The actor explained…
You know, technically, even while I’m wrapping presents at Selfridge’s in the movie, his character is still supposed to be playing a Christmas angel. It’s part of the whole setup, even in that scene.
Rowan Atkinson makes two appearances in Love Actually. First, he’s the famously slow gift wrapper at the department store while Alan Rickman’s character considers having an affair. Later, he’s one of the airport staff who helps young Sam (played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster) tell his crush how he feels.
I recently learned something fascinating about Love Actually! Apparently, Rowan Atkinson’s hilariously slow gift-wrapper wasn’t always meant to be just a quirky character. Emma Freud, the script editor, had shared that the original idea was for him to be a Christmas angel deliberately stalling Rickman from purchasing a gift. But, until now, Atkinson himself hadn’t spoken about this early concept – it’s a fun little bit of movie trivia!

You know, I’ve always loved the thought that even though the film cut the Christmas Angel backstory, we as fans are totally free to believe it happened anyway. It’s cool to me that Rowan Atkinson clearly feels his character was still fundamentally an angel, regardless of what the movie explicitly shows. It’s like he’s saying the spirit of it is still there, and that’s what matters!

Peacock TV is available starting at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. If you’re looking to watch Love Actually before the holidays, you can sign up for a Peacock subscription here: [link to deal]
A big reason Love Actually remains a popular Christmas movie is that it gives people a lot to discuss. It’s a romantic film, but not every storyline has a cheerful conclusion, and the movie leaves many questions open to interpretation, sparking ongoing debates among fans. While some viewers might not fully understand everything that happens, it’s also worth noting that certain aspects of the film haven’t held up as well over time.
