A Lot Of Marvel Fan-Favorites Die In Marvel Zombies. There’s Only One That Made Me Tear Up

The new animated series *Marvel Zombies* just dropped on streaming, and it’s possibly the most violent thing Marvel’s ever made! It’s a four-episode spin-off based on a popular episode of *What If…?* from 2021, and it absolutely lives up to the hype, creating a truly apocalyptic world. There are a lot of major character deaths, but only one moment genuinely made me tear up while watching.

OK, I Wasn’t Expecting So Many Big Deaths In Marvel Zombies

Honestly, I went into *Marvel Zombies* with no real idea of what to expect, but I was completely unprepared for just how willing it was to kill off practically every Marvel hero we know and love. At the start, I figured Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, and Riri Williams would be our main crew throughout the series. But when Kate Bishop died so early on – and after a trick arrow misfired, no less – it became clear this show wasn’t going to protect its characters the way the MCU usually does. It was a bold move, and it definitely signaled this series was going to be different.

By the end of *Marvel Zombies*, nearly every character has died, including some heartbreaking sacrifices like those of Melina, Yelena, and Red Guardian from *Black Widow*. While it was sad to see so many beloved characters go, I realized these deaths wouldn’t actually affect the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, so the writers clearly decided to go all out!

Disney+ subscriptions start at $9.99 per month with ads. You’ll have access to all Marvel Cinematic Universe releases, including the four episodes of *Marvel Zombies*. For an ad-free experience, it’s $15.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $159.99 for a full year. Check out the deal here.

But, Rocket Raccoon’s Sudden Death Made Me Want To Sit In A Corner And Bawl

But one death really hit me hard. Early in Episode 3, during a flashback narrated by Spider-Man, Rocket, Groot, and Thor rush towards Zombie Thanos. They’re instantly destroyed! Seeing Rocket reduced to just bones, with his skull briefly visible, was a huge shock, and I started crying. It was so sad to see such a beloved and troubled character die so quickly.

I’m realizing that losing an animal can be surprisingly more painful than losing a person, and that’s definitely part of why I’m so affected by Rocket’s story in *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3*. His past is incredibly sad – Bradley Cooper apparently cried a lot while recording his voice for the film, which really speaks to the emotional impact of the character.

After seeing Rocket Raccoon become the new leader of the Guardians and get a satisfying conclusion in *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3*, I expect all future Marvel characters to have equally happy endings. I’m too invested to accept anything less, and I’m not afraid to say it!
