Following the premiere of the Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, co-creator Ira Parker shared his vision for the show’s future. Parker, also an executive producer on House of the Dragon, recently stated he’d ideally like to create 12 seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, spread out over 30 years.
Ira Parker wants A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to cover entirety of Dunk and Egg’s lives
In a recent discussion, a famous screenwriter and producer shared that George R.R. Martin has planned out ideas for twelve short stories about the characters Dunk and Egg. He’s eager to turn all of these stories into a TV series.
Ira Parker, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about the future of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ explained that a key element of the show’s success, and something he hopes to continue, is pairing compelling characters – similar to Arya and the Hound, or Brienne and Podrick – and letting them interact through conversation. He believes these character pairings were a major part of what made ‘Game of Thrones’ work, and he’s aiming to include as many as possible in the new series.
Parker believes HBO intends to adapt only the three novellas, but he’d personally love to explore the story much further. He envisions creating four installments now, then another four in ten years, and a final four ten years after that—essentially following the characters throughout their entire lives, similar to the film Boyhood.
The new Game of Thrones series is set almost 90 years before the original show. It follows the story of Ser Duncan the Tall, a knight from humble beginnings, and Prince Aegon Targaryen, nicknamed ‘Egg’. Author George R.R. Martin has already written three stories about their adventures, and he intends to release more soon.
Even though there isn’t a lot of written material available, Parker is optimistic that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could run for 12 seasons. He explains that while they don’t know every detail of the story, they are familiar with the key events in the lives of Dunk and Egg. This means they’re less likely to face the same challenges as Game of Thrones. Plus, George R.R. Martin has already shared outlines for 12 more stories with him.
Ira Parker is eager to work on more seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but HBO hasn’t confirmed whether the show will continue past its current second season.
