The audience score is now available for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the new Game of Thrones spinoff. The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories, and the first season covers the first book in the series, The Hedge Knight.
After its debut on HBO Max on January 18th, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has received a 77% audience approval rating, based on over 100 reviews. While this score may change as more people weigh in, it’s currently the third-lowest rating for any season in the Game of Thrones universe. Only season 8 of Game of Thrones (30%) and season 2 of House of the Dragon (72%) have received lower scores.
The spinoff series initially received an 82% rating from critics, but its reception has continued to improve, now standing at 88% based on 56 reviews. While this is a positive score, it’s still among the lowest in the franchise, only better than the final season of Game of Thrones and the second season of House of the Dragon. It’s only 2% away from matching the first season scores of both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
| Show & Season | Critics’ Score | Audience Score |

| Game of Thrones season 1 | 90% | 96% |
| Game of Thrones season 2 | 97% | 97% |
| Game of Thrones season 3 | 96% | 97% |
| Game of Thrones season 4 | 97% | 97% |
| Game of Thrones season 5 | 93% | 91% |
| Game of Thrones season 6 | 94% | 93% |
| Game of Thrones season 7 | 93% | 81% |
| Game of Thrones season 8 | 55% | 30% |
| House of the Dragon season 1 | 90% | 82% |
| House of the Dragon season 2 | 84% | 72% |
| A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 | 88% | 77% |
A major reason people are reacting to the show this way is how different it is from the previous seasons. It’s much more lighthearted and focuses on a smaller story, without the intense power struggles for the Iron Throne and control of Westeros. While a Targaryen still sits on the throne, the royal family isn’t facing war or threats to their rule.
The series follows Dunk (Peter Claffey), a common knight attempting to earn a living by competing in tournaments, and his young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Jordan Williams of ScreenRant calls A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms “an intimately charming and nuanced take on Westerosi life and politics from an often-ignored perspective.”
While critics and most viewers seem to enjoy this show, based on its Rotten Tomatoes scores, it hasn’t made quite the same impact as the first seasons of Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. Those earlier shows focused heavily on complex political maneuvering and large-scale battles that determined the future of the realm, and this series takes a different direction.
Despite a somewhat mixed initial response, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is getting off to a strong start in terms of viewers. Just one day after it premiered, it’s the most-watched show on HBO Max in the U.S. and 13 other countries, and it ranks fifth worldwide. It’s likely to climb even higher as new episodes become available, as currently, only The Pitt, which is releasing new episodes now, is performing better.
New episodes of House of the Dragon premiere on Sundays at 10 p.m. Eastern Time / 7 p.m. Pacific Time on HBO and Max.
