George R.R. Martin is the creator of both Game of Thrones and HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The popular Game of Thrones series, which ran for eight seasons, was based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels. While the TV show ended with season eight, the book series is still ongoing.
Besides the main A Song of Ice and Fire novels, George R.R. Martin has written shorter stories and related books that take place in the same world. The Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, is adapted from Fire & Blood, Martin’s book about the history of the Targaryen family.
“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is a prequel to “Game of Thrones,” similar to “House of the Dragon.” Both prequel series are adapted from stories George R.R. Martin wrote outside of his main “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series; specifically, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is based on a collection of his novellas.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Is Based On GRRM’s The Tales Of Dunk & Egg Books
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on a series of stories called The Tales of Dunk & Egg, written by George R. R. Martin. These stories take place in the same world as his popular A Song of Ice and Fire series and follow the adventures of a wandering knight named Duncan the Tall and his apprentice, Egg.
| The Tales of Dunk & Egg Novellas | Publication Year |
|---|---|
| The Hedge Night | 1998 |
| The Sworn Sword | 2003 |
| The Mystery Knight | 2010 |
Originally released as separate stories over twelve years, the three novellas that form The Tales of Dunk & Egg have been collected and published as the illustrated book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms since 2015.
The new HBO series will also be called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The first season will be based on the book The Hedge Knight, and the second season, currently in development, will adapt The Sworn Sword.
How The Tales Of Dunk & Egg Connect To Game Of Thrones
So, if you’re familiar with Game of Thrones, you’ll recognize the world of The Tales of Dunk & Egg – it’s set in the same universe, specifically about 90 years before everything we saw on the show. And just like the original novellas, this new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, takes place in that same timeframe, giving us a glimpse of Westeros long before Daenerys and Jon Snow were even born.
Although the new prequel series, featuring characters Dunk and Egg, takes place in the same world as Game of Thrones and shares some connections to existing characters, it won’t directly continue the main story we followed in the original series.
The story of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place after the events of House of the Dragon. Readers familiar with The Tales of Dunk & Egg will recognize how it connects to the larger history of Game of Thrones.
Just to give you some context without giving away any spoilers for the HBO show, the story takes place while House Targaryen is in power in the Seven Kingdoms, so you’ll learn a bit about their history.
George R. R. Martin Plans To Write Several More Tales Of Dunk & Egg Novellas
It’s been more than ten years since George R.R. Martin released a new Tales of Dunk & Egg story, but he insists that more are planned.
George R.R. Martin recently shared updates about the future of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, confirming that season two will be based on The Sworn Sword. He also mentioned he has additional stories planned featuring these characters, including one taking place in Winterfell and another in the Riverlands.
George R.R. Martin once planned to write twelve Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. However, it’s currently unknown how many he’ll actually finish, or when the next one might be released.
Even though HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could motivate George R.R. Martin to write more short stories, he’s still facing pressure from fans to finally finish the next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter.
