Let me tell you, HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a real winner. It’s adapted from three of George R.R. Martin’s stories – The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. The first season centers around a jousting tournament, and it really hits hard when Prince Baelor Targaryen is tragically killed – accidentally struck down by his own brother, Maekar. It’s a devastating moment, especially because Ser Duncan the Tall, or Dunk as everyone calls him, had just pledged his loyalty to Baelor, saying, “I am your man,” and was eager to continue fighting by his side. This death isn’t just a blow to Dunk; it throws a major wrench into the plans of Egg, Baelor’s brother, and really complicates things moving forward. It’s powerful stuff.
Ira Parker, the showrunner, recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he doesn’t want to recast the character of Egg, even if the show continues beyond its initial three seasons. He stated, “Dexter is our Egg—or, at least, Dexter is my Egg.” He clarified that while he doesn’t have ultimate control over the show’s direction, he and Peter are the actors he wants to continue working with in those roles.
Filming for season 2 is now happening, and we anticipate it will be completed by the first half of 2027. Given the huge success of season 1 – it was called one of HBO’s most popular first seasons ever – the show is likely to be renewed for a third season. This third season could potentially conclude the story of Dunk and Egg, based on the existing book series.
When questioned about continuing the adventures of Dunk and Egg beyond a likely third season, and assuring fans that he wouldn’t replace the actors who play them, Ryan Parker said he’d be open to revisiting their story after a few years, adding more to their journey.
Parker explained that the show’s future depends on its continued success. He’d like to extend it beyond the planned three seasons, potentially to four or five. The fourth book, currently being written by George R.R. Martin, is set in an exciting new location, and the fifth book marks the end of Egg’s childhood. Parker sees this as a natural stopping point, allowing them to return to the story later with an older Egg, focusing on political intrigue and new settings like Summer Hall and King’s Landing, moving away from the constant travel of the current storyline.
A storyline following Egg over five stages is a possibility for the future. However, this presents a challenge because George R.R. Martin plans to write more stories about Dunk and Egg as they age – meaning Egg would eventually become an adult and then a king. While Game of Thrones has previously recast actors to account for time passing (as seen in House of the Dragon), actor Peter Parker has expressed his strong desire to continue playing both characters if he gets the opportunity.
Although Parker has received some playfully dismissive reactions when suggesting future seasons of A Tale of Dunk and Egg beyond the completed novellas, he notes that the idea hasn’t been rejected outright. George R.R. Martin has also expressed interest in continuing the series, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he has “a lot more stories about Dunk and Egg” and needs to write them down.

It even got nominated for nine Emmys, including the big one for Outstanding Drama Series. As the story continues into its second season, Dunk is determined to prove himself as a real knight and mentor to his squire, Egg. Martin enthusiastic about the story, fans can likely expect much more to come for Dunk and Egg.
