Fans of Westeros are getting a new prequel series based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories. Although we haven’t seen the complete show yet, it appears HBO is learning from the issues that caused the original series to falter.
In a recent interview, the showrunner for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Ira Parker, assured fans that the series won’t surpass the original stories by George R.R. Martin. Although only three Dunk and Egg stories have been published, Martin has plenty more ideas planned. He even shared summaries of these future stories with the show’s team, giving them a roadmap to follow if the show ever catches up to the novellas.
While we don’t know every detail of Dunk and Egg’s adventures, we do know the key events throughout their lives. This means we likely won’t face the same challenges as the main A Song of Ice and Fire series. George R.R. Martin has shared outlines for 12 more of these stories with me, covering their entire lives. Some are just brief notes, but they give a good idea of the characters’ future paths and which people will reappear in the narrative.
As a huge fan of Game of Thrones, I was always a little worried about the show overtaking George R.R. Martin’s books – we all remember what happened with other series when that happened! The show started in 2011, but the sixth book in A Song of Ice and Fire hadn’t been released yet. By the end of Season 5, the show had actually moved past the books, which meant the creators had to write their own ending. A lot of fans, myself included, feel that’s when the quality started to slip, and unfortunately, it led to a final season and series finale that almost everyone disliked.
Ira Parker has indicated that the show will likely adapt the first two stories from the Tales of Dunk and Egg series, as it currently has a two-season order. If the show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, progresses beyond the existing novellas before George R.R. Martin releases more, the showrunners will have a clear path forward for continuing the adventures of Dunk and Egg.
Adapting Martin’s novella ideas for the series now could potentially reveal plot points before the books are released. However, the show could have extended gaps between seasons, giving it time to progress through the entire story of Dunk and Egg, even into their older years.
Ideally, we’d be able to create many more of these stories. HBO’s current plan seems to be to adapt the three novellas, but I’d love to do twelve! I envision making four now, then another four in ten years, and a final four ten years after that—essentially following the characters throughout their entire lives, similar to the movie Boyhood.
While it might seem ambitious, the continued success of Game of Thrones proves how lasting the franchise can be. Despite the widely criticized finale, the original series and its spin-offs remain incredibly popular. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms might not cover all twelve of George R.R. Martin’s novellas, but it has a good chance of showing the complete life stories of its two likable main characters.
What’s Next for the Game of Thrones Franchise?
Even before the release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO remains dedicated to expanding the Game of Thrones universe. Ira Parker has stated that the prequel is planned for at least two seasons, and a third season is possible if it performs well. Currently, this is the only other Game of Thrones spinoff still in development.
Several other Game of Thrones spin-off series are currently being developed. One focuses on Aegon the Conqueror and his invasion of Westeros, which happened centuries before the events of the original show. This story, explored in the books A World of Ice and Fire and Fire & Blood, is rumored to be the first Game of Thrones project made into a movie. While it’s been in development for years, details about the project and when it might be released remain scarce.
Several follow-up series based on characters from the original Game of Thrones are also reportedly being developed. There was talk of a spin-off starring Kit Harington as Jon Snow, continuing his story north of the Wall after the eighth season. However, Harington has since said he doesn’t intend to return to the role in the near future. Another reported project may center on Daenerys Targaryen and her voyages west of Westeros.
The success of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is crucial for the future of the Game of Thrones universe. Its popularity will likely determine whether more spin-off and prequel series are made. If it performs as well as House of the Dragon, we can expect even more stories from George R.R. Martin’s world to be adapted for television. The main uncertainty is whether there’s enough audience interest to support them.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs Sundays on HBO Max.
