A House Of Dynamite Polarized Audiences, But James Cameron Explained Why The Netflix Movie Had ‘The Only Possible Ending’

Kathryn Bigelow’s new movie, A House of Dynamite, which premiered on Netflix in October, has sparked a lot of discussion. While critics praised its intense depiction of the moments before a potential nuclear war, many viewers were unhappy with how the film ended. But director James Cameron seems to have a different opinion.

Shortly after the successful release of his film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and used the opportunity to support Kathryn Bigelow, his ex-wife and a fellow director, regarding the ending of her movie. Cameron remembers a conversation they had over dinner a few weeks after A House of Dynamite was scheduled for release in 2025, and he explained:

I told her I completely agreed with the story’s ending – it was the only logical conclusion. The point of ‘The Lady or the Tiger?’ is that you don’t find out what’s behind either door.

If you’ve seen the thriller A House of Dynamite, with Rebecca Ferguson and Idris Elba, you might remember the ending doesn’t offer many answers. It’s unclear if the nuclear bomb destroyed Chicago, if the U.S. launched a counterattack, or even if the world survived.

The film isn’t about finding answers or witnessing destruction, according to Cameron. He feels that those elements aren’t the core message of the story, and he clarifies his reasoning as follows:

The real issue isn’t about what happens in the movie, but the terrifying reality it portrays. From the very beginning – the moment the missile launched – the situation was hopeless. The film simply demonstrates that there was no way for things to turn out well. Ultimately, it highlights the danger of these weapons existing at all. The fate of the entire world rests on the decisions of one person – the U.S. president, who has the sole authority to launch a nuclear attack. This is the world we live in, and it’s a crucial thing to consider when we vote.

The movie A House of Dynamite makes its central point very clearly in its final act. Idris Elba, playing an unnamed U.S. President, struggles with the decision of whether to strike back after Chicago is attacked. He doesn’t know who is responsible or what their motives are, adding to the tension.

James Cameron’s recent comments aren’t surprising. He’s frequently explored the risks of powerful technology, especially nuclear power, throughout his career – themes evident in films like The Terminator, The Abyss, and True Lies. So it’s not unexpected that he’d share his thoughts on how a nuclear war could be ‘won’.

The movie’s ending felt inevitable, perfectly capturing its message. It reminded me of the famous line from WarGames: ‘The only way to win is not to play.’

Considering what James Cameron has said about his novel A House of Dynamite and the topic of nuclear war, it will be fascinating to see how he approaches the subject in his planned movie adaptation of Ghosts of Hiroshima. However, both that project and the future of his Avatar films are on hold until his current movie, Fire and Ash, finishes its theatrical run.
