Noah Oppenheim, who wrote the Netflix thriller A House of Dynamite and previously led NBC News, explains why the film’s conclusion doesn’t fully resolve two key mysteries. The new movie, directed by Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow and released on October 24th, focuses on the 18 minutes following a missile strike on a major U.S. city.
The film offers multiple perspectives and boasts a fantastic cast, including Rebecca Ferguson, Idris Elba, Gabriel Basso, and Kaitlyn Dever. Just one day after premiering on Netflix, A House of Dynamite quickly rose to become the platform’s most-watched movie.
In a recent interview with Decider, the film’s writer, Oppenheim, discussed the unresolved ending and explained why the movie doesn’t reveal if the missile hit Chicago or what the president, played by Elba, decided to do. He confirmed he did have answers to both of these questions, but deliberately chose not to show them to the audience. Here’s what he said:
We’re facing two critical questions: would an incoming ICBM explode, and how would the President react? I have thoughts on both, but they aren’t the main point here. The real issue is whether any single person should have the power to decide the fate of humanity, with just minutes to react and while facing immediate danger. That scenario alone should be deeply concerning, no matter what happens afterward.
Despite the film ending with an unresolved cliffhanger, Oppenheim explained he never considered a different conclusion. He described the movie’s purpose as simply being “a call to attention and an invitation to a conversation.” While the film doesn’t show a disaster happening, he thinks viewers have already pictured it in their minds. Read his full statement below:
These technologies and systems aren’t just theoretical—they’re actually present in our everyday lives. Should we accept this as normal, or take action to change it?
The actors in A House of Dynamite have discussed the film’s confusing ending. Idris Elba explained to ScreenRant that he didn’t know what his character would choose, and deliberately avoided asking, as the decision involved a terrible choice: letting 10 million people die or risking the destruction of the entire planet.
