The early 1980s were a breakout period for Jeff Goldblum. He began landing more significant parts in films like The Big Chill and the now-cult favorite, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Soon after, by the mid-80s, he was leading films, with a standout role in the 1986 movie The Fly.
In 1985, he was involved in three film releases. One was the Western Silverado, which gave Kevin Costner an early boost, and another was John Landis’ Into the Night, which isn’t well-regarded. The third, Transylvania 6-5000, is a bit of a hidden gem that most people have forgotten. If that’s the case for you, you can actually watch it for free on Tubi, though I can’t guarantee you’ll enjoy it as much as I do!

If You’re A Fan Of Old Monster Movies, You Might Dig It
The 1994 film Transylvania 6-5000 gets its name from a popular Glenn Miller song released in 1940, “Pennsylvania 6-5000.” While the connection isn’t obvious, the movie is largely set in Transylvania, and the song is very memorable. The film itself has a lively plot: Jeff Goldblum stars as Jack, a reporter for a small New York City tabloid, working alongside Gil, the owner’s son, played by Ed Begley Jr.
Jack and Gil are sent to Transylvania by their boss at a tabloid newspaper to investigate rumors of Frankenstein’s monster being sighted. During their journey, they encounter classic monsters like the Wolfman (played by Donald Gibb, known from Revenge of the Nerds), and a creature resembling the Swamp Thing. The film is populated with quirky characters and monsters that pay homage to classic horror tropes. Fans of old Universal monster movies will enjoy recognizing the references and familiar clichés, which contribute to the movie’s lighthearted and enjoyable atmosphere.

The Cast Is Pretty Awesome
Alongside Jeff Goldblum and Dana Begley, the movie features a cast of rising comedic and acting talents. Geena Davis, early in her career and working with her future husband, Goldblum, plays a captivating vampire. Carol Kane shines as Lupi, the hotel maid, stealing every scene she’s in. Michael Richards delivers a hilariously over-the-top performance as the hotel’s strange butler. Rounding out the funny cast are Jeffrey Jones, Norman Fell, and Teresa Ganzel.
What makes this movie enjoyable, particularly for horror fans, is the cast and its clever satire. It’s not an award-winner, and it won’t be anyone’s all-time favorite comedy, but if you’re looking for a fun and funny horror movie, you could do a lot worse. Compared to a film like Dan Aykroyd’s Anything but Trouble, which tries for a similar feel, Transylvania 6-5000 has a lot more charm.
