I’m really excited for the new Mario movie, and I’ve noticed something interesting! It seems like a game from way back, almost 40 years old, is actually having a big impact on the story. The movie is going to explore the world of Super Mario Galaxy like the Wii game, which is awesome, but it’s clear they’re taking inspiration from lots of different Mario adventures too.
Just like the first movie, the story of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie draws inspiration from several Super Mario games. However, it appears at least two games – in addition to Super Mario Galaxy itself – will be particularly important for the movie’s plot and the characters featured in it.
The movie seems to be heavily inspired by Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, judging by the appearances of Yoshi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi – but that makes sense, as it was Yoshi’s breakout role. What’s really surprising, though, is how much the film is drawing from Super Mario Bros. 2.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Confirms A Major Super Mario Bros. 2 Presence
Originally released in 1988, Super Mario Bros. 2 follows Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad as they work together to rescue the dream world of Subcon from a frog-like villain named Wart. Wart took over Subcon using a machine that controlled dreams. The game also introduced several new characters who acted as challenging bosses throughout the adventure.
Trailers for the 2026 film showed a few familiar characters, including Birdo, Clawgrip, and Mouser. We also caught glimpses of two enemy types, Sniffits and Ninjis. Now, a new poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie confirms that Wart, the main villain from Super Mario Bros. 2, will be appearing in the film.
Birdo has become a popular character, but the others are mostly remembered for appearing in Super Mario Bros. 2. This suggests the new game will heavily reference the 1988 original, possibly because it’s also the first direct sequel to a main Mario and Luigi story.
Without the poster, you might think the game’s similarities to Super Mario Bros. 2 are just a quick nod to the classic. However, since three characters from that game – Wart, Birdo, and Mouser – are featured prominently in promotional materials with the main characters, it seems they’ll play a significant role, not just appear briefly.
How Super Mario Bros. 2 May Factor Into The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Story
It’s likely that Super Mario Bros. 2 will be featured through a casino setting inspired by its bonus levels, specifically the scene where Princess Peach battles Birdo and encounters Mouser. However, it’s still uncertain if the game’s dream world, Subcon, will be included, as the filmmakers might choose to leave that element out entirely.
It’s possible that one of the locations Mario and friends visit before confronting Bowser Jr. will be a combination of the different worlds from Super Mario Bros. 2. This area would be home to bosses like Mouser, Birdo, and Clawgrip, and the main boss of the region would likely be Wart.
Wart could act as an early challenge in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a kind of mini-boss that Mario and friends need to overcome before facing the main villains, Bowser and Bowser Jr., in the film’s final showdown.
