Fans of giant robots first saw a unique animated movie almost 40 years ago. Now, a buildable model kit inspired by one of the movie’s robots is being released again after seven years.

Okay, so the MG 1/100 Re-GZ Custom isn’t everyone’s first thought when you talk Gundam, but it actually comes from the world of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack! It was originally part of some really cool concept art, and honestly, it’s amazing because it can totally transform into a different form – it’s like a Gundam that can disguise itself! And the timing is perfect, because this mobile suit just appeared in a recent movie, which makes getting this kit even more exciting for me and a lot of other fans.

Gundam’s Forgotten Re-GZ Mecha Finally Gets Gunpla Re-Release After 7 Years

The MG 1/100 Re-GZ Custom is a model kit based on a unique version of the Re-GZ Gundam, which originally appeared in the movie Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack. This kit was first released as part of the ‘Mobile Suit Variations’ line, a series featuring prototype designs and concepts that weren’t shown in the films.

This model kit is impressively detailed and sizable, featuring newly sculpted parts that showcase the design’s early concepts. Water slide decals further enhance the armored sections, and multiple interchangeable hands allow for various poses. The shoulder joints are designed for greater flexibility, making it easier to display the kit with its included weapons – a beam assault rifle, beam gun, hyper beam saber, and shield.

The kit’s most striking feature is its Back Weapon System, which adds a large component to its back. This enables it to transform into the Wave Rider spacecraft – a clear predecessor to the Wing Gundam’s Neo Bird Mode.

I noticed the Re-GZ Custom model kit is available for pre-order right now through Premium Bandai. It’s going for around $43 and should ship in July. It’s been seven years since it was first released back in 2019, and that makes sense given how it’s recently appeared on screen. The kit’s mobile suit had a quick cameo in a new film set years after Char’s Counterattack. Both this film and another one released in 2021 have finally given the Re-GZ Custom a chance to shine, even if it was just a brief moment.
