Netflix’s ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Series: Release Window, Cast, Plot, & Everything We Know

After a successful movie that earned $241 million worldwide a decade ago, Assassin’s Creed is now being developed into a TV series. Netflix has been working on the project for six years, and it will bring the age-old conflict between the Assassins and Templars to viewers. These two secret groups will battle for powerful artifacts that can control people’s minds, with the story spanning from the 15th to the 21st centuries.

Filming for the Assassin’s Creed series began in Europe in March 2026, and though it’s still in early production, a Netflix release may happen sooner than expected. With the main actors confirmed and some story details emerging, it’s worth looking at the key details: who’s leading the project, where the story takes place, who’s starring, who’s directing the first episode, and when we can expect to see it on Netflix.

‘Assassin’s Creed’ Development Confirmed

Back in October 2020, Netflix and Ubisoft started talking about creating a large-scale Assassin’s Creed franchise for TV, including live-action, animated, and anime versions of the popular video game. Initially, Jeb Stuart, known for his work on films like Die Hard and The Fugitive, was set to write a live-action series. But by early 2023, he had moved on, and the project remained in development for another two years.

Netflix confirmed it will be making a video game series based on Assassin’s Creed in July 2025. Roberto Patino and David Wiener will lead the project as showrunners. The series is a collaboration between Netflix and Ubisoft Film & Television, with Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Jason Altman, and Danielle Kreinik serving as executive producers.

Patino has worked as a producer on several popular TV shows, including Sons of Anarchy, The Bastard Executioner, Westworld, DMZ, and Zero Day. Wiener also brings a lot of experience to the project, having been the showrunner for the video game adaptation Halo. He’s also worked on shows like Fear the Walking Dead, Homecoming, and Brave New World.

According to Patino and Wiener in a joint statement (via Tudum):

We’ve loved the Assassin’s Creed series ever since the first game came out in 2007. Working on this project every day is both inspiring and makes us realize how much potential the Assassin’s Creed universe has. Beyond the grand scale, exciting action, and impressive movement, at its core, it’s a story about what it means to be human – people looking for meaning in their lives, grappling with who they are, and questioning their fate and beliefs. It also explores themes of power, conflict, desire, and revenge.

What Will ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Be About?

The world of Assassin’s Creed features a long-standing conflict between two secret groups: the Assassin Order and the Templar Order. Drawing from a vast history established in over 14 video games and many spin-offs, the series explores their intense rivalry, which has played out across centuries – often from the 1400s to the present day. Both sides send agents through time, competing to find the Pieces of Eden – powerful, ancient artifacts said to control people’s thoughts.

Now that the basic story structure for the Assassin’s Creed series is established, the new project will tell a brand new story with characters never before seen in the games. The goal is to stay true to what fans love about the series while also expanding the overall mythology in a way that keeps everyone engaged.

The new Assassin’s Creed series is set in Rome in 64 A.D. and will feature a unique story within the Roman Empire. It’s a fast-paced thriller about a hidden conflict between two groups: one trying to control the future, and the other fighting for freedom. The show will follow these characters through important moments in history as they struggle to decide the fate of humanity.

Although central to the overall story, the historical setting of Ancient Rome hasn’t been fully explored in the main Assassin’s Creed video games. While Romans featured in Origins and players briefly visited the city in Brotherhood, the new Netflix series will finally deliver on a long-held desire for many fans to experience a full story set in Ancient Rome.

Who Will Direct & Star in ‘Assassin’s Creed’?

In December 2025, Swedish director Johan Renck was chosen to direct the first episode of the Assassin’s Creed series. Renck is a well-known director of music videos and has also directed the films Downloading Nancy (2008) and Spaceman (2024), starring Adam Sandler. He’s also worked on popular TV shows like Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings, Bates Motel, Halt and Catch Fire, Bloodline, and Shut Eye.

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed series is assembling a talented international cast, though their specific roles haven’t been revealed yet. The main characters will be played by Toby Wallace (known for Babyteeth and Euphoria), Lola Petticrew (Bloodlands and Say Nothing), Laura Marcus (Bad Education and Death by Lightning), Zachary Hart (Slow Horses and The Witcher: Blood Origin), Tanzyn Crawford (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Tiny Beautiful Things), Claes Bang (The Northman and The Square), and Nabhaan Rizwan (Dope Girls and In Camera).

The film Assassin’s Creed features a talented supporting cast, including Noomi Rapace (known for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Prometheus), Sean Harris (The Borgias, The Stranger), Ramzy Bedia (Of Money and Blood, Haunted Minds), Corrado Invernizzi (Romulus, Ford v. Ferrari), Youssef Kerkour (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla), Mirren Mack (Sex Education, Hedda), Louis McCartney (Hope Street, Silent Roar), and Sandra Guldberg Kamp (Foundation, Electric Child).

When Will ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Be Released?

As a huge fan of the Assassin’s Creed games, I’m really excited about the upcoming Netflix adaptation! What’s even cooler is they’re actually filming on location in Italy, which is perfect for the ancient Rome setting. They started shooting back on March 10, 2026, but with a project this big, it’s hard to say exactly when we’ll get to see it. Most likely, we’re looking at a 2027 release, at the earliest. The creators, Patino and Wiener, have promised something special, and I’m hoping their vision will get everyone as hyped as I am!

At its heart, this show celebrates the importance of human connection, no matter where people are from or when they lived. It also explores what we risk losing as a species when those bonds are broken.
