Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is exploding in a geyser of blood at the domestic box office.
The horror-comedy sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, picks up right where the first Ready or Not (2019) left off. Grace (Samara Weaving), the bride from the original, finds herself in another life-or-death game of hide and seek, this time with her sister Faith (Kathryn Newton). The new film opened last weekend and earned $9.1 million domestically, surpassing the original’s $8 million debut and setting a new record for the series.
According to Deadline, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is expected to make $4 million over the next three days, bringing its total domestic box office earnings to a disappointing amount. The film debuted at number four and hasn’t improved, trailing behind Project Hail Mary ($53.1 million), Pixar’s Hoppers ($11.3 million), and even the new horror-comedy They Will Kill You which earned between $5 and $5.5 million.
While Ready or Not 2 earned a total of [amount – not specified in original text] this week, it saw a 56% decrease in viewers compared to last week. It’s common for horror films to lose a large audience quickly, with second-week drops often exceeding 60%, so this isn’t a disastrous result for the genre. However, it’s a significant drop compared to the first Ready or Not film, which only lost 26.2% of its audience during its second weekend in 2019.
Despite a significant drop in ticket sales—more than double that of Ready or Not—Here I Come has now earned less at the domestic box office than the original film. It’s expected to finish the weekend with a total of $16.2 million, over $4 million less than the $20.4 million earned by the 2019 movie after a similar period.
This creates a challenge for the new movie. While it earned a bit more on its opening weekend than Ready or Not, the first film became successful through word-of-mouth. Its strong audience scores allowed it to make $57.6 million despite a low $6 million budget, which ultimately led to a sequel. However, the reported budget for Here I Come is much higher – $14 million – meaning it needs to earn around $35 million in theaters just to break even.
Good reviews for Ready or Not 2: Here I Come could really help its performance. While critics give it a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a bit lower than the first movie’s 89% – audiences overwhelmingly love it, giving it a 90% score, much higher than the original’s 78%. Both films also received the same CinemaScore grade of B+.
While “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” probably won’t be as surprisingly successful as the first movie, it’s performing better than some other recent horror films. Unlike titles like “Scream 7” and “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” which saw huge drops in viewers after their opening weekends, “Ready or Not 2” could still generate enough positive buzz to become profitable while it’s in theaters.
