The popular movie that brought the Alien series back to life is coming to HBO Max next week. It will be available to stream in the U.S. starting April 3rd.
The new film Alien: Romulus is the first installment in the series to be released in theaters in a long time. It proved to be very successful, bringing in $350.9 million globally despite costing only $80 million to make.
What Is Alien: Romulus About?
The new movie, Alien: Romulus, takes place between the first Alien film and Aliens. It’s not a continuation of those stories, though. Instead, Romulus follows a completely new group of characters – a set of young people who become stranded on a space station with a Xenomorph.
I’m really excited about Romulus! It’s getting great reviews – 80% positive on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and even the audience loves it with an 88% rating! Everyone’s saying it does a fantastic job of honoring what makes the series so good, but it also brings some fresh, new stuff to the table. It sounds like exactly what this sci-fi horror franchise needed!
As a huge fan of the original Alien, I was really excited to hear what Ridley Scott thought of my film, Romulus. Director Fede Álvarez told me that Scott actually came to a screening, and Álvarez was desperate to get his immediate reaction. He even sat with a notepad and pen, ready to jot down everything Scott said! Apparently, Scott walked in and, without hesitation, exclaimed, ‘What can I say? It’s fing great!’ He then told Álvarez he thought it had the potential to be a major film, which was incredibly validating.
Fede Álvarez directed Alien: Romulus, a movie he wrote with Rodo Sayagues. The film features Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.
Will Alien: Romulus Get a Sequel?
Following the success of Alien: Romulus, Disney quickly began working on a sequel, with Ridley Scott insisting on writing the screenplay himself.
I never really intended to direct a sequel to Romulus. From the start, we all knew this project was meant to be a standalone film – do one and move on. Directors I admire like James Cameron and David Fincher have done the same. Of course, Ridley Scott, as the creator, has every right to continue the series if he wants,” Álvarez explained in February 2025 at HorrorHound Weekend.
He explained they really wanted to continue the story, mainly because they were so attached to the characters they’d developed. They wanted to protect those characters from being killed off early, referencing how Hicks and Newt were unexpectedly killed in Alien 3. So, they wrote the story themselves to ensure the characters’ survival, and now they’re happy to pass the reins to someone else.
Alien: Romulus comes to HBO Max on April 3.
