Horror fans love shows that tell self-contained scary stories – think of the mischievous creature in that classic Twilight Zone episode with William Shatner, the monsters of American Horror Story, or the terrifying camera from Goosebumps that still haunts millennials. While not every horror anthology is a hit (the Monster series, for example, has had mixed reviews), these shows are perfect for escaping reality and indulging in the supernatural. You might not know it, but one of the best is The Terror.
Fans of the horror anthology series are in for a treat – a new season is on its way with another gripping story. Ridley Scott, known for his work as an executive producer on popular shows like The Man in the High Castle and The Good Wife, is also an executive producer on The Terror. This season’s storyline is sure to be thought-provoking…and maybe a little scary!
Why You Shouldn’t Miss ‘The Terror’ Season 3

Season 3 of The Terror premieres on AMC+ and Shudder on May 7, 2026. Starring Dan Stevens, who also executive produces, the new season follows his character, Pepper, as he finds himself in New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital. This season delves into terrifying themes surrounding the devil and is based on Victor LaValle’s 2012 novel, The Devil in Silver. The talented cast also includes Aasif Mandvi, CCH Pounder, John Benjamin Hickey, and Judith Light.
What sets The Terror apart as a compelling horror anthology series is its grounding in actual historical events. While many horror shows feature frightening scenarios, they rarely feel genuinely threatening in a real-world way. The Terror, however, draws on true stories, making the scares feel more unsettling. The show’s third season, set in a hospital, further enhances this by exploring serious themes like mental health and the often troubling history of psychiatric institutions, where patients frequently faced mistreatment.
Like any TV show, some events are exaggerated for dramatic effect. However, the real people involved experienced hardship comparable to what’s shown on screen. The first season depicts Captain Sir John Franklin’s 1845 Royal Navy expedition to find the Northwest Passage, which tragically led to the disappearance of all 129 crew members in the Arctic. As reported by The Independent, a Scottish surgeon named Jon Rae discovered a document from 1854 indicating the crew resorted to cannibalism. Both the true story and the show explore the desperate experiences of the starving crew, who likely faced the reality of their impending deaths. It’s a truly harrowing tale – even more disturbing than shows like Yellowjackets.
The second season of The Terror is just as intense as the first, and it tells the story of a Japanese internment camp during World War II. The show is popular because it blends historical events with supernatural themes. While Season 1 featured a creature called the Tuunbaq, Season 2 centers around a ghostly presence. As George Takei, who appeared in Season 2, explained to Entertainment Weekly:
Kaidan, traditional Japanese ghost stories, became intertwined with the experiences of Japanese-Americans who were imprisoned during World War II. The extreme stress of confinement led to broken marriages and mental breakdowns for some, and they began to interpret their experiences through the lens of Japanese folklore – stories of spirits (yurei) and possessed people (obake).
Catch Up on ‘The Terror’ Seasons 1 and 2 Before Season 3

Both seasons of The Terror are currently available on AMC+ and Shudder. You can enjoy them in any order, as each season features a unique and separate story, before the premiere of Season 3 in May 2026.
Despite changes from season to season, the show consistently delivers a creepy mood and a sense that something terrible is about to happen. While lighthearted, funny horror like the Scream movies can be enjoyable, it’s also great to watch a horror series that explores deeper themes like life, death, and bravery. Luckily, we don’t have much longer to wait – Season 3 premieres on May 7th!
