
World of Warcraft is a remarkably interesting game when you consider it as a study of people. Launched in 2004, it’s become Blizzard’s most successful title, and has received numerous expansions over the years. Players have guided Warcraft heroes through places like Outland, Northrend, Pandaria, and Draenor, all while battling against evil forces.
The latest World of Warcraft expansion, Midnight, takes players back to Quel’Thalas to face a dangerous new enemy. Like past expansions, it offers both exciting challenges and rewards.
The Story So Far
The War Within Kicked Off A Trilogy
The new update raises the level cap to 90 and begins a journey to defeat Xal’atath and protect Azeroth. The story of World of Warcraft has evolved significantly in recent years, and while some long-time players may have mixed feelings, Midnight plunges players into a battle against the Voidstorm and Xal’atath, set in the familiar lands of Quel’Thalas. Midnight is the second chapter in the Worldsoul Saga trilogy, following The War Within and leading into The Last Titan.
World of Warcraft can seem overwhelming when you first jump back in, but Blizzard has made it much easier for returning players. They’ve added features like story summaries and special areas designed for those who haven’t played recently. Even if you’ve been away for a while, you can quickly get back into the game and understand what’s happening with just a few hours of play.
The game begins with defending the Sunwell, and soon you’ll venture out into the wider world to face various dangers in Midnight. It often feels like a bridge between earlier and later parts of the story, which has both advantages and disadvantages. The developers have learned from past experiences and have made it easier to play solo, especially in activities like delves.
The game’s story doesn’t consistently create the same sense of urgency as The War Within. However, introducing the Haranir – a race described as being similar to dark trolls and night elves – is a welcome change. They give Midnight more character and help it feel like a unique story, instead of just setting things up for what comes next.
The areas in this expansion are well-designed, offering a good balance of story and gameplay as you level up. While the overarching plot about the war against the Void isn’t always captivating, the actual experience of playing and progressing is enjoyable. How much you get out of the expansion will likely depend on your personal preferences, but as a long-time Warcraft player – I’ve been with the series since the beginning and finished every World of Warcraft expansion – I found plenty to enjoy.
Currently, two out of the three endgame raids for season 1 are available. Voidspire and Dreamrift are proving popular with players, offering enjoyable challenges and a strong sense of community. Both raids feature compelling boss battles and impressive visuals, demonstrating Blizzard’s continued skill in creating high-quality MMO content.
WoW Midnight Could Push Things Further
But Works With What It’s Got
What makes Midnight special is its sense of discovery. Ever since the original World of Warcraft, I’ve loved simply exploring and stumbling upon new places, quests, and hidden rewards. Midnight keeps that feeling alive, and its areas are beautifully designed.
The game’s feeling of discovery is made even better by the optional “Prey” system, which allows powerful, unique characters to hunt players in the open world and even interact with them. This feature feels like something that could have been added to World of Warcraft a long time ago – it’s a simple addition that makes exploring more exciting. Hopefully, Blizzard will build on this system, perhaps taking inspiration from the Nemesis system found in Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War.
Player housing in Midnight has been a huge success for Blizzard. I got an early look at it, and I’m still really enjoying it now that the game has officially launched. The developers have included so many options for players to customize their homes – it’s almost possible to push the game’s limits to create truly unique designs and themes.
Blizzard has made getting player housing surprisingly easy compared to other big online games, offering lots of choices and diverse locations – from lakeside spots to mountaintops. It’s a really enjoyable feature that’s long overdue, and after months of playing with it, it’s clear a lot of effort and attention to detail went into its creation.
What Will The Future Of WoW Look Like?
The End Of The Trilogy Is Coming Soon
World of Warcraft has been popular for over two decades, and it looks like it could stay that way for another 20 years. While the stories in each new update aren’t always the most compelling, the developers are listening to players and steadily improving the game, even adding features like player housing.
If you used to play World of Warcraft but haven’t recently, it’s a good time to start again. There are lots of helpful new features for players, making it easy to pick up where you left off. However, don’t expect everything to be perfect with the new Midnight content.
