Okay, huge warning: spoilers ahead for the season 5 premiere of For All Mankind! As a long-time fan, I have to say this new season kicks off with a really gripping episode, but it definitely leaves you wondering where things are headed. After five amazing seasons of this alternate history show, we’re almost at the present day, and with it being the second-to-last season, the stakes feel incredibly high. It’s a tense start, and I’m already hooked!

Expanding humanity’s reach to other planets, like Mars, and building relationships with Earth is turning out to be far more challenging than expected. This struggle impacts everyone involved, including brave individuals like Ed Baldwin, whose futures are now uncertain.

Ed Baldwin’s Time Is Running Out

Ed Baldwin has been the central character in For All Mankind since the show began in 2019. Joel Kinnaman’s portrayal of the determined and headstrong space pilot has been crucial to the series so far. But as the show jumps forward in time to new decades, Ed is aging, and his health is declining.

The first episode of For All Mankind season 5 introduces a health scare for Ed Baldwin. What initially appears as a simple cough is quickly revealed to be stage 3 cancer, and the doctor warns him that he can no longer fly or participate in strenuous activities. This diagnosis strongly suggests that Ed’s time is limited.

Because of his unwillingness to compromise, Ed hasn’t told his daughter, Kelly, and grandson, Alex, something important. Let’s hope they can resolve things before it’s too late.

Dev Ayesa Wants To Build A City On Mars, Despite Helios Being Against It

Dev Ayesa first appeared in season 3 as a wealthy and forward-thinking entrepreneur. His initial dream was for his company, Helios, to be the first private entity to reach Mars, beating out national governments. While he didn’t succeed with that plan, Dev is now pursuing an even bigger challenge: building a city on Mars.

Meru, a planned city, aims to offer a comfortable and self-contained lifestyle for thousands of residents, complete with modern amenities, even hundreds of millions of miles from Earth. However, Helios, now under the leadership of Aleida Rosales, is concerned about Dev’s tendency to publicly announce big plans and spend money without first consulting them.

A New Generation Graduates On Mars

Season 5 begins with a shift in focus, as some familiar characters seem to be moving on while a new group takes center stage. Alex Baldwin, Lily Dale, Marcus Haskell, and Gulsora Akilmatova are introduced as key players who will likely drive the storylines forward this season.

The Rebels Have Formed The SDM To Give Voice To Mars

As a lifelong movie fan, I’m totally hooked on this story! So, the kids born on Mars? They see it as home, plain and simple. But things are getting tense. A new group is forming, and it seems Ed Baldwin and Miles Dale are leading the charge – these are folks who aren’t exactly thrilled with how things are going. You see, after they captured that meteorite and put it in orbit around Mars, people started building lives there, raising families, really trying to make it their own. It’s a cool setup, but clearly, not everyone’s happy.

As the population on Mars grows, Martian residents – known as the SDM – are seeking more control over their own governance. Currently, however, a group of powerful Earth nations called the M6 makes all the decisions regarding life on Mars, including how it’s run and the rules everyone must follow.

Lee Jung-Gil Has Been Arrested For Murder

In the final moments of For All Mankind season 3, the Mars landing team uncovers a surprising development. Russia had previously sold specialized satellites designed for unmanned missions to deliver supplies to Mars before any crewed landings. However, North Korea secretly used one of these satellites to launch two cosmonauts to Mars, attempting to reach the planet first.

Lee Jung-Gil incredibly reached Mars in a spacecraft that wasn’t designed for a manned mission. He amazingly survived until a rescue crew found him, earning him the title of the first human on Mars and a place among the crew of another Martian habitat.

Years after becoming a hero, Lee is now at the center of a new first on Mars. The first episode of For All Mankind season 5 ends with Lee being accused of murder. While this seems out of character for him, it sets up a significant murder mystery that will likely be a major plot point this season.
