The Straw Hat Pirates have become known as a crew that’s hard to defeat, consistently overcoming stronger and stronger opponents as they sail through the Grand Line. They’ve defeated powerful figures like the Warlords of the Sea and even the Emperors, but sometimes their victories don’t feel fully deserved, despite reinforcing the series’ core messages about friendship and never giving up.
Sometimes, what needs to happen in a story is more important than what makes sense. This often lets the Straw Hats win battles even when they probably should have lost. Whether it’s characters not using their full potential, questionable strategies, or just lucky breaks, many of their fights realistically should have ended in defeat.
Hody Jones’ Underwater Advantage Made No Real Difference Against Luffy
Hody Jones had two main weaknesses as a villain. First, he felt too much like a copy of Arlong, sharing a similar personality despite being potentially stronger. Second, the final battle on Fish-Man Island highlighted how dangerous Hody was underwater, a natural advantage for his race. He also used Energy Steroids to significantly increase his strength. Considering all this, a fight between Hody and Luffy in a water bubble should have easily gone Hody’s way.
Luffy, the main character of One Piece, spent two years training, becoming much stronger than he was at the Battle of Marineford. However, like Hody before him, Luffy had a critical weakness: because he ate a Devil Fruit, he relied on a bubble around his body to stay afloat. Hody didn’t fully take advantage of this vulnerability, which ultimately led to his loss.
Admiral Aokiji Allows the Straw Hats to Escape His Clutches
I still remember when the Straw Hats first ran into Admiral Aokiji – it was way too early in their journey for them to even think about taking him on, even all of them together! Seriously, this guy was on another level – he could actually freeze parts of the ocean with his Ice-Ice Fruit, which is just incredible. When he came after Nico Robin, the crew didn’t back down, and they tried to fight, but Aokiji was just too strong and experienced. They put up a good fight, but his power was overwhelming.
The Straw Hats managed to escape, rescuing Robin, but their escape didn’t affect the overall battle. Aokiji fought well enough, but he intentionally let them go, holding back his full power. If he’d truly wanted to stop them, the Straw Hats would have been captured or killed. Aokiji’s decision to show mercy was what allowed them to get away.
Enel’s Lightning Could Have Easily Vaporized Several Straw Hats
Enel possesses the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, an incredibly powerful Devil Fruit – Nico Robin even called it unbeatable. He can generate massive electrical attacks capable of destroying entire city blocks and even turn his body into lightning itself. However, his powers were ineffective against Luffy because rubber doesn’t conduct electricity. With Luffy’s Gear 5 ability to transform into rubber, Enel would be even easier to defeat now.
Enel was the first character to demonstrate the subtle skills of Observation Haki – originally called Mantra – making him nearly unbeatable unless you had Luffy’s unique ability. Zoro was knocked out by an attack much weaker than Enel’s strongest move, and Usopp and Sanji didn’t even stand a chance. It’s odd that someone as ruthless as Enel didn’t kill the Straw Hats, especially since none of them were seriously hurt by his lightning attacks.
CP9’s Kalifa Should Have Never Underestimated Nami
This arc marks a major challenge for the Straw Hat crew, testing their abilities like never before. Notably, Nami faces off against Kalifa, a formidable agent of CP9 who wields Rokushiki techniques and the dangerous Bubble-Bubble Fruit – a particularly threatening combination in the hands of a skilled assassin.
The Bubble-Bubble Fruit lets its user steal an opponent’s strength, making them progressively weaker. Nami wasn’t very powerful to begin with, so Kalifa quickly overcame her. However, Kalifa underestimated Nami’s cunning, as she played with the Straw Hat crew instead of finishing her off, which ultimately allowed Nami to find a way to win.
Admiral Kizaru Only Failed Because Silvers Rayleigh Intervened
As we saw with Aokiji, the Admirals were simply too strong for the Straw Hat crew before their two-year training period. When Kizaru arrived at Sabaody Archipelago and fought them, the Straw Hats were in serious trouble. Kizaru’s Devil Fruit power allowed him to move at the speed of light and had incredible attack strength, which is why he defeated several powerful pirates known as Supernovae. He nearly killed Zoro, but Silvers Rayleigh arrived just in time to save him.
It was incredible! As long as Luffy kept battling, Kizaru was completely stuck – he had no choice but to let the Straw Hats escape. Then, out of nowhere, Kuma showed up and basically teleported each of them to different places, keeping them safe from the admiral for two years! Honestly, Luffy was just on another level compared to Kizaru during that fight.
Charlotte Kakaturi May Have Actively Chosen to Lose to Luffy
Charlotte Katakuri is the strongest of his siblings and appears destined to take over the family business. Interestingly, he’s also the only one who secretly wants to be beaten. He doesn’t show this desire until Luffy proves himself as a worthy and persistent opponent. Although their fight starts fiercely, Katakuri slowly begins to admire and respect Luffy, even going so far as to intentionally hurt himself to make the battle fairer.
During his fight, Katakuri changes his approach, but surprisingly, it’s motivated by respect, not rage. Some fans believe he deliberately didn’t fight at full strength, finding it hard to truly attack someone he considered worthy. Ultimately, Luffy wins, but it’s a very close call.
Zoro Magically Realizes How to Cut Steel and Defeat Mr. 1
Zoro’s strength has steadily increased since the beginning of the story, with a significant jump happening near the end of the Alabasta arc. Fighting Daz Bonez, who could harden parts of his body into steel, was a tough test for Zoro at that time. While Zoro could easily defeat Daz Bonez now, he wasn’t nearly strong enough to do so back then.
Zoro was constantly pushed to his limits by Daz Bonez, and this intense pressure triggered a sudden surge in his strength, allowing him to cut through steel. While this kind of power-up is common in action-packed stories, it only happened because Daz Bonez wasn’t holding back enough. Daz Bonez’s aggressive approach actually allowed Zoro the opportunity to unlock his potential and ultimately win the fight.
Gecko Moria’s Overconfidence Was His Ultimate Downfall
Gecko Moria once possessed the Shadow-Shadow Fruit, a powerful Devil Fruit that let him steal people’s shadows. He used these stolen shadows to create an army of zombies and even fight using shadow copies. A particularly cruel aspect of this fruit was that anyone whose shadow was stolen couldn’t tolerate sunlight. However, Luffy proved to be an exception to Moria’s control.
The Warlord became obsessed with defeating Luffy himself, ultimately using Shadow’s Asgard – a powerful but unstable form. Instead of strategically manipulating events, Moria foolishly opted for a direct confrontation, which suited Luffy’s abilities perfectly. Like many villains before him, Moria underestimated Luffy and paid the price for his arrogance.
Both Crocodile and Kaido Had Multiple Chances to End Luffy
Luffy was defeated by both Crocodile and Kaido several times. After their first fight, Crocodile left Luffy for dead, but didn’t quite confirm the kill, allowing Luffy to recover and return stronger. Even after defeating Luffy again, draining his moisture with his Devil Fruit power, Crocodile failed to deliver the final blow. These errors proved to be valuable lessons for Luffy, ultimately leading to Crocodile’s downfall.
A similar situation played out with Luffy’s fight against Kaido. Luffy boldly challenged Kaido, but was immediately defeated with one blow. He kept trying, and eventually unlocked Gear 5, which was crucial to winning the fight – without it, Kaido would have won. Interestingly, both Crocodile and Kaido hesitated to deliver the final blow, allowing Luffy to ultimately overcome them both.
The Five Elders Somehow Failed to Kill a Single Straw Hat
The introduction of these characters showcased an incredible display of strength in One Piece. They are the leaders of the World Government and wield strange abilities, each enhanced by a powerful Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit. Similar to the challenge posed by the Admirals earlier in the series, the Straw Hats were completely unprepared to fight enemies who can heal from any wound and even come back to life.
Each of the Five Elders fought a different member of the Straw Hat crew, but surprisingly, none of the Straw Hats were defeated. They managed to avoid attacks, buy time, and withstand the Elders’ power just long enough to get away. If the Five Elders are truly the strongest fighters, their failure to eliminate even one member of a Yonko crew calls their reputation into question. Ultimately, neither side won or lost; the battle ended in a stalemate.
