After 5 Years, James Bond’s Next Movie Is Finally Moving Forward

Fans might finally learn who the next James Bond will be in 2026. Steven Knight, the writer for the upcoming Bond 26 film—produced by Amazon MGM Studios—recently shared an update on the movie.

In a recent conversation, screenwriter Knight was asked about the progress of the next James Bond film. He shared that he’s enjoying the writing process, saying, “It’s so much fun,” but couldn’t reveal any specific details. When asked if Amazon MGM Studios would be making any announcements soon, Knight hesitantly agreed, adding that how quickly things move forward depends on what’s meant by “soon,” but confirmed progress is being made.

Bond 26 Will Be the Franchise’s First Under Amazon

The upcoming James Bond film will be the 26th in the series, which is why it’s often called Bond 26. This movie will be a first for a couple of reasons: it’s the first Bond film released by Amazon MGM Studios, and it’s the first not made by Eon Productions. Eon Productions previously held the creative rights, but recently sold them to Amazon for around $1 billion. Instead of Eon, Amy Pascal and David Heyman will be producing the new film.

Details about the movie’s story are still secret, but director Denis Villeneuve promised fans when he took the job in June 2025 that he would treat the James Bond franchise with respect. He shared that he’s been a lifelong fan, watching the films with his father since Dr. No starring Sean Connery. Villeneuve considers James Bond a special and important series, and intends to stay true to its history while also paving the way for future installments.

The next James Bond film, currently known as Bond 26, is anticipated to start filming around 2027. This will be director Denis Villeneuve’s next project after Dune: Part Three, which Warner Bros. Pictures will release in December 2026. The first two books of Frank Herbert’s Dune series were adapted into a film released earlier this month.

Knight’s recent interview with Variety didn’t reveal many details, though he suggested further announcements are coming soon. He was more open when speaking to BBC Radio 4 earlier this month, where he shared his appreciation for Ian Fleming’s Bond novels.

Honestly, these books are incredible – seriously underappreciated as literature, in my opinion. What really gets me is the world the author built; it feels so unbelievably real, but also totally dreamlike. And his writing style? Amazing. I’m a sucker for good dialogue, and this has it in spades. I have a very specific vision for how I want to adapt this, and thankfully, I’m working with a truly fantastic team. Who Will Be the Next James Bond?

Daniel Craig finished playing James Bond in 2021 after five movies and 15 years. Since then, everyone’s been guessing who will be the next 007, and actors like Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, and Henry Cavill are often mentioned as top contenders.

Sources say the next James Bond, as envisioned by Amazon and director Denis Villeneuve, will be a relatively unknown actor in his late twenties or early thirties. The team behind Bond 26 is apparently looking for someone who embodies the original Bond from Ian Fleming’s novels – physically imposing, over six feet tall, and a skilled, yet somewhat unremarkable, operative.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a strong contender for the next James Bond, and he’s already acknowledged the speculation, though he hasn’t commented on it directly. He simply stated he wouldn’t discuss the rumors earlier this year. If current reports are accurate and more announcements about Bond 26 are coming soon, with filming scheduled to start next year, fans should know who will play 007 before 2026 ends.
