The announcement of “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past” has excited fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, as the upcoming movie may feature a character they love.
What beloved character could show up in LOTR: Shadow of the Past?
Following ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ another live-action Lord of the Rings film is in the works. Peter Jackson has revealed that Stephen Colbert will be involved in adapting the story for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures.
Stephen Colbert is writing a story alongside his son, Peter McGee, and Philippa Boyens. He’s also collaborating with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh to turn it into a movie.
I’m really excited about ‘Shadow of the Past’! It’s going to cover the first six chapters of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ that Peter Jackson didn’t include in his movies. The story takes place right after the chapter where Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin meet Strider at the Prancing Pony, and before they reach the Barrow-downs.
Colbert explained that he wondered if a separate story could work within the bigger narrative. He wanted to create something that stayed true to both the original books and the existing movie adaptations, as his audience knew them.
Peter Jackson’s films left out Tom Bombadil, a beloved character from the books, because the early parts of the story where he appears weren’t adapted. In the books, Tom rescues Merry and Pippin from Old Man Willow and later saves them from a dangerous creature called the Barrow-wight in the Barrow-downs.
Now that Stephen Colbert is working on these parts of the movie, it’s likely we’ll finally see Tom Bombadil appear in a live-action film. Actor Rory Kinnear previously played Tom in the Prime Video series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Fourteen years after Frodo’s journey ended, Sam, Merry, and Pippin revisit where their adventure first started, according to the story’s description. At the same time, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers an old secret and tries to find out how close the War of the Ring came to being lost right from the beginning.
As a huge fan of Middle-earth, I’m still waiting to hear when The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past will finally hit cinemas. What I do know is it won’t be out until after Andy Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum, which is scheduled for release on December 17th, 2027. So, we’ve got a bit of a wait ahead of us!
