Prime Video is getting a significant update in just two weeks. The streaming service has become increasingly popular, and recent hits like the show Fallout have solidified its place as a leading platform. It’s arguably more popular now than ever before.
Because so many people get Prime Video as part of their Amazon Prime membership – essentially getting it for free – any updates to the service are particularly noteworthy. With a new update launching soon, it’s especially helpful to understand how Prime Video is evolving.
April 10 Brings A Major Change For Prime Video
On April 10th, Prime Video’s ad-free subscription will be upgraded to Prime Video Ultra in the U.S. This new version will offer several improvements, including the ability to stream on five devices at the same time (up from three), more downloads per account, and access to higher-quality 4K and UHD video.
The upgraded streaming service will cost more. While the ad-free version of Prime Video used to be $2.99 per month, the new Prime Video Ultra will be $4.99, a $2 increase. However, Amazon notes that existing Prime members will still have access to the standard Prime Video benefits, according to Amazon News.
Most Prime members won’t see any changes to their Prime Video access. However, customers switching from the ad-free Prime Video plan to the new Ultra plan could end up paying up to $20 extra, on top of their existing Prime membership fee. It’s important to be aware of this potential price increase.
Prime Video’s Ad-Free Change Ties Into A Bigger Streaming Service Trend
Prime Video’s recent changes aren’t unusual for streaming services today. It’s part of a larger trend across the industry, and Prime Video is simply one of the latest platforms to make these kinds of updates.
Over the last year, streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and Apple TV have all raised their prices. This widespread trend shows it’s not just about individual company choices – nearly all major streaming services are increasing costs due to overall financial pressures.
These price changes seem partly due to inflation. Streaming services, for example, can’t keep their prices the same forever, as that would effectively reduce their annual earnings.
Another reason for Prime Video’s decision is the expensive cost of creating or acquiring large-scale releases that attract subscribers. This is especially true for popular fantasy and science fiction series like Stranger Things, Fallout, and Rings of Power, which naturally require significant funding and extensive CGI effects.
As we move into 2026, it will be fascinating to see what new information comes out about Prime Video and other streaming platforms. This will likely continue to change the way we watch things, and what we choose to watch will still depend a lot on cost and value.
