Paramount+ and CBS recently canceled the show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy after it had finished filming its second season. William Shatner, the original Captain Kirk from the 1966 Star Trek series, has expressed his disappointment with the decision.

The experienced actor shared his thoughts on X (previously known as Twitter) on Tuesday, March 24th, voicing his frustration and explaining why he supports the new direction of the franchise.

In his initial post, the actor from Boston Legal shared his thoughts on what makes Star Trek special. He believes the franchise isn’t just about exploring space and human achievement, but also about tapping into our imaginations. He noted that it delves into the full range of human feelings – physical, mental, and emotional. While excited about the possibility of seeing more stories set at Starfleet Academy, he expressed disappointment at the news that the new Star Trek show had been cancelled.

The Emmy-winning actor continued sharing his thoughts online. He recalled that his Star Trek series faced criticism when it originally aired, even leading some southern TV stations to remove an episode due to a kiss they found inappropriate. Shatner pointed out that, using today’s language, his show might even be called “woke,” suggesting that issues of censorship and societal reaction haven’t really changed over time.

The actor, known for his role in The Twilight Zone, mentioned that both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise faced criticism for not being like the original Star Trek. He explained that ‘Star Trek has always meant something different to everyone.’

In his last message, Shatner addressed the feedback he’d received. He confessed he hadn’t watched the whole show, only a few short clips.
