Ever since episode 3 of Paradise Season 2, the name “Alex” has been a mystery. We still don’t know who or what Alex is, even as the season nears its end. The latest episode is incredibly suspenseful and ends with a major cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager for the finale. It seems likely that Alex is connected to the show’s time-travel elements, especially considering the surprising revelations about Link (Thomas Doherty) and his possible relationship with Samantha (Julianne Nicholson).
The episode begins by resolving the cliffhanger from last time, focusing on Xavier and Teri. Thankfully, it has a positive outcome. Teri manages to connect with Gary and convinces him to release her, Xavier, and Bean. Despite everything Gary has done, Teri’s plea, emphasizing Xavier’s good character, shows she still cares about him and hopes he can find a path to redemption. This moment highlights Teri’s strength and the powerful connections these characters have made with each other over the past few years.

Let’s shift our focus back to the bunker. After a strong episode centered on Jane (Nicole Brydon Bloom), her character has been unexpectedly removed from the story. Gabriela (Sarah Shahi) anticipated Jane’s actions and, in doing so, saved her own life, but at the cost of Jane’s. While Jane was a powerful antagonist, her death is also important because it highlights how isolated Samantha has become. Even her daughter, Hadley (Kate Godfrey), is now working with the resistance.
This episode reveals that Samantha’s actions are entirely motivated by her unresolved grief over her son’s death. Unlike her husband, she hasn’t been able to accept his loss or move on, and her attempts to ‘save’ the world are actually driven by a desperate hope to bring him back. For Samantha, a world without her son isn’t worth living in, so saving it feels pointless. This new understanding reframes everything she’s done – it’s not about protecting humanity, but about finding a way to reunite with her son, Dylan. Everyone and everything else is simply a means to that end, just pieces in her larger plan.

Jeremy, Nicole, and Anders – the scientist who oversaw the bunker’s construction – managed to succeed in their risky plan to break into the control room and disable the oxygen circulation, hoping to force the bunker doors open. However, in a cruel twist of fate, a lockdown was activated simultaneously, originally intended to keep a dangerous group from entering. This not only made their efforts pointless, but also triggered a dangerous meltdown that could destroy the bunker and everyone inside.
If Dr. Louge is correct, Earth is facing a catastrophic event that will make it impossible to live on. The only hope for survival, if the current shelter fails, is to travel back in time – perhaps even before the machines were destroyed, the lockdown began, or the massive tsunami even occurred. The latest developments suggest this is exactly what will happen.

Samantha’s composure actually hints at a deeper emotional struggle than we first thought. She doesn’t seem like a typical villain, but rather a desperate mother trying to revive her child. It’s hard not to feel some sympathy for her, and to wonder if any parent in her situation, with similar resources, wouldn’t do anything to bring their child back.
Samantha’s evolving perspective might be due to meeting Link. He shares information, particularly when he asks about Alex, and hints at a past involving time manipulation, altered realities, or even simulated worlds. Link’s former boss, Henry Miller, was a quantum physicist involved in this research, and Link played a key role – potentially an even bigger one than we realize.

Hulu
The biggest clue that supports the time travel idea comes when Link reveals his true name is Dylan. Samantha is stunned, realizing he shares the same birthday as her deceased son and is currently the age Dylan would be. The nosebleed Samantha experiences as Link leaves suggests she’s encountered someone from the future, similar to what likely happened when Billy met and killed Henry. While we knew Link was important, this revelation dramatically deepens the story and draws strong parallels to the mystery and complexity of the show Lost.

The second-to-last episode strongly suggests that time travel isn’t just a key part of the story and Samantha’s mission—it could actually be happening. The episode ends with a huge cliffhanger: Samantha goes deeper into the bunker and speaks to Alex, looking up at him in a way that implies he’s a robot, not a person. This suggests she’s ready to put her long-term plan into action and may feel she has no time left to wait.
As Cal explained to Samantha in a memory from when the bunker was almost complete, “Everything truly great eventually comes to an end.” With the season drawing to a close, the finale promises to reveal what happens next and how things will ultimately unfold.
