Be aware, this article contains minor spoilers for the first season of Marshals! As Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe grows, Mo Brings Plenty is discussing the possibility of Yellowstone returning in connection with Marshals.
Created by Spencer Hudnut, who also worked on SEAL Team, this series centers on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes). Kayce had been living a peaceful life on the eastern side of his family’s ranch, but everything changes when his wife, Monica, passes away after a long illness. Now a single father to his teenage son, Tate, Kayce is encouraged by an old friend from the Navy SEALs, as well as Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo Brings Plenty, to join the U.S. Marshals, hoping to find a new purpose.
As the current season unfolds, Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant spoke with Mo Brings Plenty about the show Marshals. When asked about how the series portrays Montana and the effect of Broken Rock’s ownership of the Yellowstone ranch, the actor was hesitant to reveal if the famous ranch will appear in the new spinoff.
Despite not knowing when, Brings Plenty hinted that there will be plenty of chances to reveal what’s happening at the Yellowstone ranch in the show Marshals. He also mentioned the mining operation slowly expanding into the area, saying it’s just one of several groups interested in the land, and that there will be no shortage of stories to tell about Yellowstone.
Following years of struggle to maintain the Dutton family’s land, Yellowstone concluded with Kayce selling the famous ranch to Broken Rock for a record amount, also forging a strong bond with Rainwater as blood brothers. So far, the first four episodes of Marshals have focused on Kayce and Tate’s life at their eastern camp, while any scenes with Rainwater and Mo have been set on the reservation or in public places.
Although we haven’t seen it on screen yet, the show could easily showcase the central part of the Yellowstone ranch. Currently, the Broken Rock tribe is dealing with a new mining company trying to claim their land. Federal Marshals are involved to maintain order, but they’re facing criticism from both the reservation and people who feel the Dutton family has lost its standing after Kayce sold the ranch.
The new series shows increasing hostility towards Rainwater, Mo, and the Broken Rock from supporters of the mining operation, even including a recent attempt at a drive-by shooting. If they feel ignored, this group might follow the example of past antagonists in Yellowstone and directly attack Rainwater and his team on their ranch.
There’s a possibility the Yellowstone ranch could be featured in the Marshals series through flashbacks detailing Monica’s death. So far, the show has only mentioned her passing in conversations and shown her gravesite. These flashbacks could show Kayce seeking help from Rainwater and Mo while Monica was still ill, and might even allow Kelsey Asbille to reprise her role as Monica in a surprise appearance.
Whether “Marshals” will include the famous Yellowstone ranch largely depends on the show’s finances. Although filmed in the same region as the original series, “Marshals” reportedly has a budget $20 million smaller, potentially making it too expensive to film at the main ranch location near Darby, Montana. Despite this, since a second season of “Marshals” has been confirmed, the show’s creators might still be able to find a way to feature the iconic ranch.
New episodes of Marshals season 1 air Sundays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
