Dakota Fanning’s Marvel Casting Is Officially Debunked After MCU Casting Rumors

One of the oldest Marvel Cinematic Universe rumors finally gets a proper answer once and for all.

Dakota Fanning recently addressed rumors about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an interview with The Direct. She confirmed that the reports are false, stating, “There hasn’t been, no.” While she denied involvement currently, she also indicated she isn’t interested in joining the MCU in the future.

Fanning said she’d be very interested in the possibility, explaining she’s noticed the rumors circulating online – sometimes even on Instagram. This has led her to check with her agent to find out more. However, she confirmed that, as of now, those rumors aren’t true.

Who Was Dakota Fanning Speculated To Play In The MCU?

Back in 2022, there were rumors that actress Saoirse-Monica Jackson might be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leading fans to speculate she could play Sue Storm in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. However, when Vanessa Kirby was officially cast as Sue Storm, those rumors were proven incorrect.

It’s common for actors to be linked to superhero roles in movies and TV shows, both for DC and Marvel. So, it wasn’t surprising when rumors started circulating about Fanning potentially joining a superhero project. Interestingly, she actually has some history with the genre – she voiced a young Wonder Woman in an episode of Justice League Unlimited called “Kid Stuff.”

Why Dakota Fanning Joining The Marvel Cinematic Universe Won’t Happen Anytime Soon

Even if she were to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it won’t be happening soon. As of now, Dakota Fanning is committed to several projects, including a lead role in and executive production of an Apple TV thriller series created by Alex Cary, which has already been approved for production. These commitments will keep her busy for the foreseeable future.

Dakota Fanning isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In addition to her current work, she’s also preparing for two new films, Alma and The Nightingale. She’ll not only star in The Nightingale, but also help produce it alongside her sister, Elle, with filming scheduled to start later this year.

With Fanning’s acting career growing, a role in a Marvel movie or show is still a ways off—and would need to be the perfect fit. Marvel is currently wrapping up its Multiverse Saga and focusing on projects planned for Phase 6, so they likely won’t introduce any major new characters until Phase 7, at the earliest.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will continue with season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, premiering March 24th on Disney+. Then, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the first big-screen Spider-Man movie in this era, arriving in theaters on July 31st. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for a December 17th theatrical release. Release dates for the VisionQuest TV show and the Punisher MCU special haven’t been announced yet, but are expected in 2026.
