Ryan Gosling’s ‘Project Hail Mary’ Tops Box Office After Biggest Opening Weekend of 2026

The box office results are in for the weekend of March 20-22, and a new movie has quickly become this year’s biggest hit. Ryan Gosling’s latest film led the charts, earning widespread praise and quickly gaining a dedicated fanbase. It earned over $80.5 million domestically and nearly $141 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This is the highest domestic opening weekend of the year, surpassing Scream 7‘s $63.6 million, and it’s already the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2026.

Disney and Pixar’s latest film, Hoppers, came in second place this week. It almost reached $50 million in North American ticket sales during its opening weekend and earned around $18 million in its second weekend – a decrease of about 60%. So far in 2026, Hoppers is the second highest-grossing movie worldwide, behind the Chinese live-action film Pegasus 3.

Next up on this list are two new releases: the international film Dhurandhar: The Revenge and the American horror sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, both of which earned between $9 and $10 million in the U.S. Further down the list are two films that have been performing well for a while: Scream 7, starring Jenna Ortega, and the animated film GOAT, featuring NBA star Stephen Curry and Caleb McLaughlin from Stranger Things.

Rounding out the top 10 is James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire & Ash, the third film in a hugely successful movie series. Even 14 weeks after its late 2025 release, it remains the 10th-highest-grossing movie as of mid-March, continuing to add to its impressive earnings. Worldwide, it currently ranks 16th all-time with a total gross of $1.49 billion, surpassing Frozen 2 (2019) and trailing just behind Top Gun: Maverick (2022).
