The live-action adaptation of One Piece continues to be a hit on Netflix. The first season surprised everyone in 2023, becoming the first truly well-made live-action anime adaptation by staying true to the original story while making smart changes and nailing the casting. Season 2 faced the challenge of bringing more of the fantastical elements from Eiichiro Oda’s world to life, but the creators, led by Matt Owens, successfully maintained the show’s quality.

Netflix has confirmed a third season of One Piece, and the ending of season 2 strongly hints at what’s coming next. After successfully healing Nami, gaining a new crewmate (a raccoon!), and unintentionally freeing a kingdom, the Straw Hats are now sailing towards the island of Alabasta. Their mission? To defeat the dangerous organization Baroque Works and protect Vivi’s homeland from a destructive civil war instigated by the villainous Crocodile, a powerful member of the Seven Warlords.

Season 3 of One Piece promises to be the most thrilling and action-packed part of Luffy’s adventure yet. It will also feel quite different from the first two seasons.

One Piece Season 3 Will Be Set Almost Entirely In One Location

One of the defining features of Netflix’s One Piece has been its constant travel. From the very beginning, Luffy was already out on the ocean, and he hasn’t stayed in one place for very long. In the first season, Luffy’s journey took him from Shells Town to Orange Town, then to Syrup Village and the Baratie, ultimately ending at Arlong Park. Season 2 picks up in Loguetown and continues with stops at Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, Little Garden, and the Drum Kingdom.

The Going Merry will likely see much less action, meaning we’ll see fewer scenes of Luffy’s crew sailing the seas in the upcoming episodes. If season 3 of One Piece features visits to new islands, it will probably be through flashbacks or stories focusing on characters like Portgas D. Ace or Garp.

Will the sense of adventure still be present in One Piece season 3? Probably. Alabasta is a much larger island than any the Straw Hats have visited so far, offering a wide range of interesting places to explore, like the royal palace, Crocodile’s pyramid, towns, and deserts. Alabasta feels like a real country, and just like a country, it has diverse landscapes that will keep the Straw Hats challenged as they travel. It’s just that everything will take place within the borders of Alabasta.

Season 3 of One Piece represents a significant shift in the show’s structure. Unlike the first two seasons, which often focused on a single island within just a couple of episodes, the live-action adaptation will now dedicate each season to exploring only one or two islands.

Prepare For More Battles In One Piece Season 3

While One Piece isn’t a traditional fighting manga like Dragon Ball, it definitely has plenty of action. You’ll see this even more clearly in the third season.

The first two seasons of the live-action One Piece series have featured action scenes that were fairly well-paced. The first season built up to a major showdown between Luffy and Arlong, while the second season (the Whisky Peak arc) highlighted Zoro’s fight against 100 assassins from Baroque Works. Although the second season included plenty of action with characters like Buggy, Mr. 3, and Wapol, it didn’t end with a single, climactic boss battle like Season 1 did.

If the show stays true to the manga, season 3 of One Piece will be packed with action, featuring numerous fights like Luffy against Crocodile, Zoro versus Mr. 1, and Sanji battling Bon Clay. Alongside these individual showdowns, the Alabasta arc will plunge the island into a large-scale civil war, creating a more intense and expansive battlefield than anything we’ve seen in the live-action series so far. While the season will still include lighter moments, powerful speeches, and impressive sights, it will largely focus on battles and combat.

One Piece Season 3 Will Go Heavier On Lore (& Political Commentary)

The first two seasons of the One Piece Netflix series, like the original, spent a lot of time introducing each member of the Straw Hat crew and sharing their personal stories – something creator Eiichiro Oda does exceptionally well. However, this focus meant there wasn’t much space to explore the broader, rich history of the One Piece world. While we’ve gotten hints about things like the “Will of D.” and God Valley, these haven’t yet fully connected to Luffy’s journey or explained the detailed backstory of the series.

That’s another thing One Piece will change in season 3.

The events unfolding in Alabasta, driven by Crocodile’s schemes, will start to reveal the core mysteries of the One Piece world. We’ll begin to see more of the Poneglyphs, the ancient weapons will take center stage, the World Government’s hidden agendas will come to light, and the Seven Warlords will become a much more prominent force, rather than just a shadowy organization with Mihawk as a member.

Beyond its adventurous spirit, One Piece is increasingly tackling complex political themes. It might be surprising given the series’ often over-the-top humor and action, but One Piece is remarkably insightful about real-world issues. It’s no coincidence that the Straw Hats’ pirate flag has become a symbol at protests and demonstrations worldwide.

The Alabasta arc marks a turning point for One Piece. Vivi’s struggle to protect her kingdom, and Crocodile’s role in causing chaos, reflect real-world issues. The discussion between Cobra and Wapol earlier in the series hinted at these deeper themes, but from this point forward, the story tackles more significant subjects like inequality, climate change, and the importance of learning from the past. Season 3 is where One Piece evolves beyond a simple adventure about a fun-loving hero defeating villains.
