After 23 seasons, the show NCIS finally gave character Timothy McGee a compelling storyline, something actor Sean Murray felt his character needed. McGee, a long-time member of the NCIS team since the very first season, has had a difficult couple of years, especially after the departure of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon).
This season has been significant for the CBS show NCIS. Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) shocked Alden Parker (Gary Cole) by announcing that after 34 years, NCIS will be closing and merging with the Army CID. This dramatic reveal comes just as the series is about to celebrate its 500th episode – a major achievement for the long-running TV show.
Timothy McGee Discovers He Has A Secret Son In NCIS Season 23
McGee’s story deserves to be told with the same depth as his impact on the team. While the events of “In Too Deep” were a shock for him, they were exactly what he needed to grow. Although it wasn’t the kind of professional training he was hoping for, this episode presented a genuine challenge, increasing the emotional pressure on McGee and allowing actor Sean Murray to deliver a particularly strong performance.
In Episode 12, the NCIS team investigates a missing person, and the case hits close to home when they discover the missing woman is Tim McGee’s former girlfriend, Olivia Garcia. The surprise comes when Olivia’s son, Mateo, arrives at NCIS and reveals he’s now eighteen, leading Tim to realize he might have another child he didn’t know about.
Tim loves his twins with Delilah and never intended to be distant, leading him on a difficult emotional path. As Vance and Parker compete at FLETC, the MCRT team finds Olivia. Back at the office, Kasie Hines juggles another case and uses DNA evidence to confirm that Mateo is indeed McGee’s son.
Now that Olivia is safely back with NCIS, McGee finally confronts the question of why his past love never revealed their family connection. He then focuses on building a relationship with his son, Mateo, determined to be an active part of his life. This marks the beginning of a new, ongoing storyline for McGee, who has recently experienced a period of personal stagnation.
How Mateo Garcia Fixes Timothy McGee’s NCIS Story
The recent episodes felt slow for McGee. Season 21 of NCIS, which was cut short, didn’t give Murray’s character much to do. Meanwhile, the storylines for Alden Parker and Jessica Knight became more intense, and they had major developments in the season finale. While McGee dealt with disagreements with Delilah over their house, the rest of the NCIS team was moving forward with their own cases and growth.
Man, things really shifted around for me at NCIS. First, Jess headed off to run REACT training, and Nick went deep undercover with the Nexus Cartel – pretty intense stuff for them! Meanwhile, I felt like I was stuck in neutral. I went for the Deputy Director job, hoping for a step up, but I lost out to Gabrielle LaRoche, the DOJ Inspector General. Talk about a setback!
According to his wife, Delilah, Tim was hoping for a more predictable schedule and a safer work environment. It also seemed logical that he would get promoted at NCIS, considering how much he’d grown from a clumsy new agent to a key leader working alongside Vance and Parker. Although he turned down the chance to lead the team at one point, he still needed time to further develop his skills.
Mateo’s story resonated deeply with McGee, offering a change of pace and connecting with his core beliefs – a hallmark of Murray’s character. After 23 years with NCIS, McGee deserves this development, and there’s no reason to halt his progress now. If the agency continues, McGee still has the potential to advance further in his career.
